>>>>6.5 - 300 Weatherby.... cause DRT....???<<<<

I think I should have put in more detail of what I think a DRT shot is all about...LOL. Head shots, neck shots, even high shoulder shots don't count when it comes to DRT shots that are placed in the lungs, liver, and even further back. I was involved with some kids deer hunt where they were all shooting 243 rifles with factory ammo... and they were dropping deer when shots were 100 yds or less... and the shot placements were randomly placed. So I shot a nice buck a week later with my 243, expecting the same results with a typical lung shot at 80 yds... but it ran 90 yds before piling up and without any blood. That started my to thinking more about high speeds... light bullets... creating MORE shock... for more DRT kills for randomly place shots.

I do not have a 6.5-300 Wby but my favorite rifle for Alaska (I am a resident in SE Alaska is a 6.5 STW. From what I have whiteness so far on 8 Sitka Blacktail, 1 black bear, and one giagantic Billie mountain goat is that the high RPM of my bullets being either a 129gr bonded or 142gr matchking is at 3400 fps the 1-8” really turns the bullet into a forward driving blender. The Blacktail are quite small as far as North American deer go but I use this particular rifle for longer shots above the alpine in August hunting and it still wipes out a little meat. I’ve been a neck shooter since I was 10 years old but once I get out past 450 yards I take a body shot and lose some meat.

I reread some of the previous posts and saw people find neck shots controversial. I have had a completely different experience on a lot of game. This season second day of grouse/deer season August 2nd I went out for a grouse hunt in the evening and something made me pack my ruger single nine in 22 mag. I thing so I don’t get completely ambushed by a bear while dressing birds but anyway I jumped a buck and had time to draw my 22 mag and one neck shot he was dead by the time I found him. 2-4 minutes anyway. Very reliable even undergunned

Well... I do have a 22-243 AI that instantly drops deer when shot in the front half of the deer with 80 gr Amax @ 3550 fps... but they still run somewhat when shot in other places... and without any blood to follow.... except one time I shot a big doe through the lungs at 40 yds and NEVER saw so much blood blow through any deer on the other side... a measured 12 feet past her... blood painted all the brush past her... and that trail was easy pezzy for 60 yds. But when shot in the shoulder area... DRT.

Speed Kills real fast, Larger temporary wound cavity pushes the elastic limits of the tissue, turning it into a permanent wound cavity....my best guess.

Speed freeks could tell us some serious stories. A gunsmith friend down in Dalton, Ga had a 6.5 Wild cat based on a 257 Weatherby case, AI'd. They were shooting the 120g Sierra MK at 3500, and he had a cult following of a couple of hundred fellows. I met a few of the fellows in his shop, they had so many stories of bang flops, it was hard to get them to shut up. They did not get many firings on the brass, they did not care. I was shooting a 257 Weatherby with zero freebore with the 100's at 3850 on a 26" three groove Pac Nor 10T that shot very tiny groups, less than 3/8". I still have this short freebore reamer, and I think that it has cut 6 chambers now, and every barrel shoots tiny groups. You see the bullet impact the animal with this 257 W. with the 100's doing 3850 when using a Gentry muzzle break. The 80g Barnes ttsx are doing 4130 fps, but have never killed with them.

Another friend here is shooting a 6mm Gibbs with the 70g at 4400, deer rifle with 30" barrel. He grins a lot when talking about his 6 Gibbs.
