6.5-284 problem

I recently built my first br rifle. It is a rem action, 6.5-284, I know its not the best but e.r. shaw bbl, 1.250 dia, glued in a hs prescision stock, I use a redding bushing neck die, necks turned on norma brass. I have had the accuracy sickness for many years, but never had a custom rifle, ok enough rambeling, here is my problem, I have shot many .061 to .085 groups in the first 3 rounds but the last 2 fly off at least a half inch. why is it that it,or I) can hook up the first 3 rounds, but the others just wont stay with the others? Any help is appricated. Oh yea, the load that seems most consistant is 45.5gr h4350 with 140gr smk.

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but all things considered your load seems a bit light. Most shooters are using about three grains more powder,H4350) with this bullet weight.

Of course, all loading precautions apply :)

How heavy is the barrel, some light weight's heat up really quick and start tossing bullets to the 4 winds.......

I am in Texas, it is hot,90 to 95 for today. Any more powder and start to see sighns of over pressure. And the bbl is straight 1.250 26" long.

That's interesting! It's commonly 100+ degrees in the summer months here and a common load among 6.5-284 shooters is 48.5gr. H4350, 142 SMK or 139 Scenar, Lapua brass, and BR-2 primers.

I fully realize that some rifles will develop higher pressures with loads that are perfectly fine with others, but three full grains difference seems like a lot.

What does your load chronograph at? What's the ES and SD? I'm asking because when I did the initial load development on my rifle I found that loads such as yours gave me erratic groups and showed high ES and SD figures.

I'm not trying to induce you to load hotter than you think is prudent. Just trying to figure out your problem :)

I'm brand new to the 6.5 x 284, so I'm certainly no expert. But I heard that the H4831SC is also a great powder for the 6.5 x 284 in higher temps.

I think I would swap over to H 4831 sc for a few loads. But I'm not so sure that mirage is not playing a big part in your deliema. Would be interesting to know what happens with the powder swap. Bill

The above load chronys at Sierra...2809, Bergers.....2877.4. Both loads are 140gr, and on the same day as I posted this thread. I have done most of this load work up with sierra and some with bergers, sierras seem most consistant, but both do same thing. I tried H1000, and to say the least some cases wont hold primers anymore. I have no problem over pressuring my rifle, when it breaks that gives me a very good reason to buy someting else. Thanks for the help guys

Ok, I went and shot some this past weekend, I tried some h4350 and h4831sc. And I tried 142smk this time. The 4350 @ 45gr shot .433", all 5 at 400 yards. The 4831 shot 1.327", with 50.3, and 1.8" with 50.5. I stared at 45gr h4350 going in .5gr incr to 47gr, ran out of daylight didnt get to shoot all of them and didnt get to chrony them. I dont really know what a "good" group at 400 is, I know what I think pretty good is, but I dont know about you guys.
