6.5-284 action length

You can load and fire no problem. The problem with a short action is removing a loaded round. You will need to remove the bolt to do it.

As a single shot? Sure with the exceptions of unloading an unfired cartridge as noted above.
Magazine fed, unlikely.
My 6.5-284 load with 156 grain EOL seat right at 3.200" so it's even just a pinch tight in an Intermediate action (XM+) magazine.

The bolt thing is not an issue for me @Walt Krafft I am pretty used to hair shirt set ups.

At this point I am just kicking the idea around. I shoot 600 yards now and am curious about shooting 1k or 1 mile. That, plus I have always liked the 284 and am a fan of 6.5mm bullets. Good excuse to build a chassis rifle.

Straight 284 with 166 a tips seated out and I am running a long action. I have never owned a medium but I seriously wonder if they would function well in a medium as I seem to be using plenty of the long action and mag well.
As stated empty rounds would not be an issue but loaded rounds would be a major issue on eject.

Go a long action and don't look back.
Food for thought. All tikkas are the same action length and bottom metal. Only difference is the mag and the bolt stop. I'm running a tikka with a 30-06 mag and it works perfectly. Can also switch barrels and run 308, 260 etc using the same 30-06 mag and be able to seat bullets well out.
Long action rem or clone. They are now making ACIS or CIP length mags that can feed 308 length cartridges. So you can run cartridges from 300PRC down to like 22-250 all on a long action.
So unless you want to run a 6br length cartridge in the same action, which would be really compromising the 6.5x284, I don't see a lot of downsides to a long action.
