model 70 pre-64 .270 action

if u had a model 70 pre64 long action .270, what would you build. i am thinking of a 6.5-.284, or a .264 mag. what is anybody idea for a long rang deer and target. i dont want anything to punishing, and i really like either a 6.5mm or a 7mm at max.

Many people overlook the 280 Rem.

7mm bullets for 1K shooting, no feeding problems on a 270 action, and plenty of bullet choices for hunting.

I have a .270 Weatherby that was built many years ago
on the pre-64 model 70 action it started out as a .270Win
and I enjoy it very much.It feeds well and brass is available through Norma and in a pinch it can be made from 7mm mag.Lots of good choices out there I often think if I was to change the barrel on this rifle I would go up a little to a 7mmMag
the .270 bore fills a niche for sure, so I think it will stay the way it is for awhile.

If it was mine and the barrel wasn't shot out I'd leave it as is. Pre 64 model 70's are collectors items to the right person. Besides that there is nothing wrong with a .270 chambering.

I shot 3 mule deer in 2008 with a pre 64 M70 that I rebarrelled from 30-06 to 270 with a Pac Nor barrel.

I also put on a Bordon RimRock stock.

I shot two at 400+ yards and one at 500+ yards as measured with a crf1200 Lecia rangefinder.

I used 130 gr Nosler ballistic tip bullets.

280,Rem or AI), 6.5-06, 30-06

Any one of those rounds will give you the performance you're looking for.

For hunting long range deer or elk sized game it would be 280, 30-06 then 6.5-06

For really long range with those class I'd use

180gr 7mm's
208 Amax, 210 VLD class 30's
140+ in the 6.5

RL-22 will be your friend in the 280 and 30-06.

I vote for 280AI. You can get brass from Nosler if you don’t want to fire form. There are plenty of reloading dies too. Ballisticaly the 280AI is about 50fps behind the 7mm Remington Mag; all things being equal. All you have to do is a rebarrel, load and shoot.

Besides, why would you want to tie one arm behind your back by stepping down to 6.5mm. You need more powder capacity to push the same weight bullet and there are twice as many bullets to choose from in 7mm.

H4350 For the light stuff,120-150) and Retumbo for the heavy stuff,150-175). Both are extreme powders, so you don’t have to reload for both winter and summer. One load should work year around.

since you asked about 6.5 my choice would be 06. real easy to convert as someone said earlier. www.therifler.com

First of all, it depends on your usage. You have a number of fine cartridges available on the 30/06 case that will feed fine through the magazine. Any other sized brass will require a minimum of feed rail alteration. Magnums require a boltface and extractor alteration, also. IMHO, If the rifle is all original, sell it for a premium and build a rifle using a custom action. Just be aware that the smaller the bullet diameter on that '06 based case, the less barrel life you will get in return. That being said, I do like the 280/7mm express family of cartridges. The .260 Remington is a doable conversion with a magazine block, longer bolt stop and ejector. The Pre-64 M-70 in .308 and .243 Winchester were setup in this way. That was long before the "pushfeed and short action versions of the M-70 Winchester. Greg

I'd choose the 280AI especially for bigger bodied deer. The 6.5-06 may be less punishing (depending on bullet weight) if you are doing more target shooting but may suffer a bit more barrel wear. JMHO

If it is an original pre-64 with the dog bone barrel, and it still shoots, leave it alone. Especially if it is a higher grade rifle.

If you absolutely have to change it, save the original barrel and stock, and go with the .280 or .280 AI.

I own a bunch of calibers and hunt with them. I own two 6.5-06's, a post 64(1975 25-06) and a 1917 enfield. I love them. I shoot a 270,7mm Rem Mag (2), plus big guns 300 mag's, 338's 375. The 6.5 has a lot of really good bullets and low recoil. I used to shoot the Win 6.5-06 in the National Match Course and did win a silver medal in my class at the state match. The 7mm's are good but you get more recoil when you get to the heavyer bullets, you have to shoot the heavyer bullets to get the higher balistic co's. The 6.5 has given me more one shot kills with the 120 bullet than the 25-06 has with 115, 117, and 120's on antelope 200 to400 yds. used the 25 this year in Mont. Their will be fewer feed problems with cartridges off the 06 case in your gun. The 264 mag will require you to modify your action- don't do it. keep your action original and shoot and enjoy. With the 6.5-06 keep the throat short, some people optmise the throat for the real long bullets which hurt the light bullets. MY $.02
