Rem 700/308win change to 6.5/284 Question

Have a older Rem 700 BDL and would like to change to 6.5/284 have a new Custom barrel 1/8 twist at 30 will cut to app 27" and chamber.and will put it in a robertson hunting stock inletted for Rem short action This is for a longrange hunting gun using the Berger 140gr with 612 BC
Question will the floor plate on magazine work for the .284 case

You need a long action to take full advantage of the 6.5X284 if you feed from the magazine.

Case should work but you will loose one round capacity. Butch is right, you will need to use the original wildcat reamer instead of the Norma or Lapua version. Bullet will be seated well into the case to make mag length.

Might want to look at an extended box magazine, I am not sure how much you will gain for length but it will be more then a standard mag. The Norma chamber is a bit longer in the throat, and its my understanding the Winchester has a shorter throat. As to loads, mine loves the 120 TSX, 130 accubond pushed by H4350. As to feeding, I have a stiller predator action I have not screwed a barrel on yet and just for giggles I screwed the bottom metal, mag, spring, and follower to it and ran some 6.5x284's through it. Feed without a hitch, but the follower looks like it could use a little work to get the cases to sit propped. It also threw the cases out the front of the action and across my bench, don't know if this is typical, but it was impressive! Good luck, good hunting, and good times!

A long action would work better for that round. Since you have a short action, have you considered a 6.5X47?

What the others are saying about mag length. I have a short action 40-XC built into a LR gun in 6.5-284 Norma. It's a pain to withdraw unfired rounds out of the port. Don't know about ejecting empties because I have no ejector, but the empties pluck out easily enough. For a hunting rifle I would think you want a 30-06 length action.
