what kinds of ranges do you shoot your loads at to test? i usually shoot at 100 yards, but was wondering if i need to start shooting 200 to get a better idea of the bullets being more stable.
what kind of load do you have behind your 105's?
i have the lapua brass, i have bench rest and magnum primers i think i may have some retumbo or h 1000

Here is what I am shooting right now I was using H-1000 with the same charge as this Retumbo load but with Retumbo I have more velocity and lower ES and SD
and less pressure so it was a no brain er to change.

I have two suggestions and you might not like them but I would try Winchester brass and a non magnum primer a Fed 210 Match is the one I would use. I started out with Win brass than I thought I would try Lapua Brass and my rifle hates it and will not shoot decent until the pressures are to high for my liking such as heavy bolt lift and flat primers. I tried all kinds of loads and powders with the Lapua brass and it never did shoot anything close to the win brass. Can you post what your group looks like before you change anything and is the rifle bedded correctly?

the rifle is not bedded, it is in a choate sniper stalk.
to do win brass wouldnt i have to do a lot more brass prep to get it shootable? rite now i have the full length, neck sizer and seater die for the 6-284 from redding, wouldnt i need another die or something? ill go take some pics of some groups and post them in a bit

The first thing I would do is bed the rifle. I am not saying non bedded rifles will not shoot because they can but if I have problems that is the first thing I do. You would need a 6.5 or 25cal Neck Sizer die to bring it from 284 down to 25 than you would use your full length die to bring it down to 6mm. I bought a redding 6mm284 neck die that brings them down to 25 but you could just try any 6.5 or 25cal neck die and see if that would work just run the case through the die just to size the neck and not touch the shoulder. I do not know about the 100gr bullets you are shooting but the 95 Berger group looks about like what I have been getting in anything I try them in. That caliber and case are one of the most accurate I have ever seen so if you have a good barrel, bedding and chamber job it should shoot. Have you checked your scope or changed scopes and made sure your bases and rings are tight? That has bit me more than once when I had something lose or the scope was bad.

yes i took the scope off and even sent it back to vortex to check it out, then changed rings and tightened the base so that should be good now.

i am going to try the 105's and see how they do. there is a guy who shot my match this weekend who has a 6-284 with a 1:9 twist and he is running 107 smk's

What is your velocity myour getting with those 105's

Retumbo is an Extreme powder. I am running those 105's at 3305fps with single digit ES and SD.

In the winter with 53.5 grs of Re#22 I was getting 3425 pushing Sierra 107s 1st warm day with that load I nearly locked my bolt up. I think I'll try some retumbo in my 30" tube.

only getting more and more frustrated.
i tried some h 4381sc ladder test 200 yards and couldt get tighter than 2" probably couldnt hit a golf ball more than once out of 3- 5 shots.

i have loaded some b. s. speer 85 grain btsp to try tomorrow to see if this will shoot anything. here is my list

primers---- br2, fed lrmag
powder--- retumbo, 4831sc, reloader 22 and 19, ramshot magnum
brass------ lapua
bullets--- 95 berg, 100 and 105 precision ballistics and tomorrow will add the 85 grain speer to the list

what do i do? do i keep plugging away and hope to find a load or do i talk to the barrel company and tell them their barrel is sh*t or what?

i have probably put 150+ rounds through it off a bench with sand bags
fairly new vortex viper pst with tight screws

Have you bed it yet ? What about trigger ? How often are you cleaning it ? What are you using for copper removal ?

Who makes the barrel? I went back through your posts and I seen it was built on a savage Stevens action. What trigger did you put in it and what weight is it set at? Another question is where are you placing the bags when you shoot this rifle meaning where on the stock is the front bag and where on the stock is the rear bag?

it is not bedded since it has a v shaped block in the choate

i have an older stock trigger with three adjustment screws, i dont know what the weight is but its light. i was gonna switch out triggers to a comp trigger that goes to ounces.

its a mc gowan barrel

the bags are under the fore end of the stock where the bipod goes and one that i use to squeeze under the butt. the barrel has about an 1/8 of an inch on each side of the barrel so it isnt touching.

I would try move your front bag back just in front of the recoil lug area. I know you are frustrated but you will get it figured out. How does the copper fouling look in this barrel when you clean it?

Caleb, you could switch barrels from one of your other Savages to verify it's not a hardware issue. After talking to you it sounds like a picky barrel, much like what I'm dealing with on my 22-250 AI. I was able to solve it by trying different primers; try the Winchesters, Remingtons, Russians if ya got em. If you're still pulling your hair out at that point, go to plan 'B'.

plan b is in the works now, i am waiting on payment for the dies, barrel and brass. so now i need to figure out what i want to build off a long action

I was hoping yours would turn out ok. I'm trying to decide what to do with mine next time too. I was originally going to do a 6.5-284 in the beginning. Now I'm thinking about it still as well as the straight or improved 284, 280AI or the list goes on.

I would not go to plan b yet if I were you I would try get the problem nailed down. Just put the rifle away for a few days and walk away from it. Then go back and start changing some if the things mentioned. I have had to do this a couple of times that is why the shooting game is fun right? Besides you might re barrel and have the same problem. I also was going to ask how many inch pounds of torque do you have on your action screws?
