6-284

Calib,
It was good meeting you today, thank you for the stuff, I apologize to you and your girl friend for not at least saying hello to her, sometimes I get focused on things and space things like that, still no word >:( >:( anyway I sure hope to be there it is going to be a hoot.

this is also posted on my thread in the reloading area. i would like everything here though.
thanks

well i went out today and shot up some rounds i loaded and found out my the neck size after shot is .279"

i shot a couple decent groups while breaking the barrel in, but now have a lot of work to do to make everything work out rite. i also have some questions for you guys that shoot this round.

1. is 4 thousandths of change in neck size causing pressure issues if a bullet is jammed?
2. do i need to do something different when loading now that i know my neck size in the chamber?
3. does lapua brass get stamped easily by ejector pins?

i will have more questions soon

i was thinking today about my loads. i was noticing that my gun fowled very quickly like in a groups worth of shooting the patch would be black. my combination has been a fed lrm primer, 30" barrel and reloader 22. i shoot the reloader 22 out of my 243ai and get a much better burn. what do you guys think i should do? my gunsmith buddy said try reloader 19 or a faster burning powder than the reloader 22. i have 19 and some other powders, but what about primers. i have stayed with one primer so i can see what my loading is doing and not get confused with all the variables.

Caleb,
I have always used Federal 215M primers with the 6*284 and RL-22 what was your powder chg and what was the velocity?
Wayne.

When mine was a 26" bbl and 10" twist I was able to push 87gr V-maxs at high Velocity burning 52grs of Re#17. Maybe I'll try some in my new bbl ?

I have a 6mm284 with a 27inch Hart barrel with a 9 twist. I have shot the 95 Berger over 3500fps with either R-22 or IMR-7828 but I will tell you that bullet is picky and it shot ok but not nearly as good as the 105 Berger VLD. I would give both of those a try and see what your rifle shoots better. You should not have any trouble with the 105's in a 9 twist I have shot mine out to 1200 yards when it was below zero and my elevation was 865ft above sea level. With the 105 I would look at Retumbo as a powder to use I am running them at 3305fps and the ES and SD are in the single didgets. Here is a group I shot with this load and the rifle will shoot that any day of the week as long as I steer it right.

I am using the Fed 210 match with Win brass. I have used the Fed 215 also but the ES and SD are not as low.

ES was a big problem I was having among other issues with my 6-284 so I just wondered.

LRPV,
Many things can effect ES but play with seating depth I think you will find when your getting to the sweet spot you will see the ES/SD drop right off, seating depth seems to be a large part of ES for me.

i have had a hard time loading this round. i dont know if brass, bullets, to much going on rite now or what. today i did shoot some of my better groups yet, but they are not what i want and i had some other problems when firing them. its amazing though, my 243 ai that i have assembled and disassembled multiple times i can throw a scope on zero it and stack rounds where i want them. its not real picky and shoots well in different heat ranges. would almost be tempted to ream this 6-284 out to 243 ai. the only thing about the 243ai i have now is that the sweet spot i have found and stayed with is only at 3150fps, but accurate.

wayne,
you coming to the match?

Boss told me only if Ray doesn't go the playoffs his kids are in and that depends if they win tomorrow so I still don't know, that sucks I know but it's the best I can do, I will get online tomorrow and at least pay my fees as I told you I would do weather I can go or not.

What bullet are you trying to shoot out of it and what brass and powder are you using? I have two 6-284's one with a 9 twist on a long action and 1 with a 12 twist on a short action. My father also has 6mm284 10 Twist on a long action. All three drive tacks with all kinds of bullets and powder. If you are trying the 95 Berger's just set them aside and try a different bullet. I have never been able to get them to shoot consistent in any 6mm I have tried them in even my 6BR. If you are using R22 it works great if you live where the temperature does not change much but if it changes 20 degrees or more I would look at IMR-7828, H-1000 or Retumbo. Another thing to try if you are wondering if the rifle can shoot is get some 95gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and load them up and see how it shoots. I have never seen that bullet not shoot and I have tried it in a dozen or so different 6mm's with different powders over the years and they have always shot.

i have been trying to get some 100 grain target vld's from precision ballistics to fly, but also i have been trying some 95 grain bergers. i have been using reloader 19 and 22. i may have to try the nosler, but i also have a bunch of different weights of the 6mm bullets from precision ballistics.

do you guys think my 1:9 twist at 30" could stabilize a 103or 105 vld like bergers since thats about what these bullets are like?

Give the 105 Berger VLD a try and it will stabilize that is what I am shooting out of mine and I have a Hart 9 twist barrel. I have shot that bullet well below zero and out to 1200 yards and they have never had a problem stabilizing. If I were you I would try H-1000 or Retumbo and I would start at .10 off the lands and work your way in. The sweet spot with the 105's out of my rifle is .07 off the lands.
