This is why I say a little prayer before I look at the fifth shot. If it is in, I thank the Lord.99.8% of the time a 5th round flyer is the shooter’s fault. Its hard to argue 4 goes good then poof the 5th is out. Now the third or 4th ill buy an out of tune gun. Its usually always a trigger slap or a gun not returned to battery in a rush
You have 7mins to run a group. The barrel could draw the heat from the bore if you shot the first 4 then waited i guessJust thinking outside the psychological box here (it's the engineer in me, sorry) but, assuming the group is completed inside a few minutes (say ten minutes max) won't the 5th shot always be from barrel at it's peak temperature?

Wait. I thought there have been lots of 5 shot [or 10 shot] groups where the last one is not a flyer.Just thinking outside the psychological box here (it's the engineer in me, sorry) but, assuming the group is completed inside a few minutes (say ten minutes max) won't the 5th shot always be from barrel at it's peak temperature?

Just addressing OP's subject, verbatim: "5th Round Flyer Phenomenon".Wait. I thought there have been lots of 5 shot [or 10 shot] groups where the last one is not a flyer.
Right. But, I was replying to the thought that the 5 shot would always be the furtherest out because the barrel had heated the most.Just addressing OP's subject, verbatim: "5th Round Flyer Phenomenon".
I do not consider random "flyers" to truly be flyers, I consider them to reveal inherent dispersion. The fact that 4 shots, in whatever order, often happen to cluster means nothing. Coincidence is not rare, it happens all the time.

Got it. But of course I never asserted that. I only pointed out that the barrel would always be warmest for the 5th shot. That's possibly relevant if someone seeks to explain every 5th shot being a flyer.Right. But, I was replying to the thought that the 5 shot would always be the furtherest out because the barrel had heated the most.
I've let my barrel cool to the point I don't feel heat and it still happens.Got it. But of course I never asserted that. I only pointed out that the barrel would always be warmest for the 5th shot. That's possibly relevant if someone seeks to explain every 5th shot being a flyer.

Oh. well, try shooting them in reverse order, shot #5 first, followed by shot #4, etc.I've let my barrel cool to the point I don't feel heat and it still happens.
Love It!Oh. well, try shooting them in reverse order, shot #5 first, followed by shot #4, etc.

Exactly.I generally know when that fifth shot is in or out when it leaves my hand. For me it is definitely a feel thing. The gun seems like it is returning to battery by itself, I can’t miss and all in the world is right. If for some reason that fith shot goes out, I know it’s is the gun or load, not me. Or I know it’s me.
If it is me, I get back on the horse and shot 5 more times to prove it to myself. If it is the gun or load, I get back on the horse and shoot until I figure out the why.
What if I am shooting 6 shot groups, but only shoot 5 shots? May eliminate the flier!?Oh. well, try shooting them in reverse order, shot #5 first, followed by shot #4, etc.

All kidding aside, I found my last shot fliers were from neck and eye fatigue. Although most often I was shooting prone with a shooting mat, bipod, and sand bag. What if I am shooting 6 shot groups, but only shoot 5 shots? May eliminate the flier!?
