500 with the 22-250 ?

what do you all think would be the best "bullet, brand-type".. an powder combination to make a 500 yard shot using a varmint grade 14-twist barrel off a bench in the 22-250. this would be for a paper match

i'm mostly interested in your thoughts or experience in the bullet type.. but powder info would be a plus

thanks in advance

I have used the Berger 55gr target (22410) and Rx-15 or 4895 with plesing results...I cant give charge wts because Culver cliks are not allowed...just go to max and bak off one number and then try jam and jumpin...the rifle will tell you what it likes...Roger

banged steel and dropped quite a few yotes at that range and a bit over with a 22-250 w/ 50 gr vmax. Win brass, cci br2, and 39.5 gr H380. Zero at 200 yds and at 500 drop was 7.5 moa. Decent in the wind, same drift as a 223 with 69smk at that range, if memory serves me correct.

my 40x hart 13 twist shoots 55 sierra bk at 3725 and i havetaken pd at 500+ on a number of ocausions, it shoots under .2 at 100 so that helps. i use h414 pr/p brass and 9 1/2

looks like i have a bit of testing... pretty wide range of suggestions

RL-15 was suggested elsewhere 'the rifle will tell you what it likes...Roger' i like that one..

berger has a 55gr FB w/.262 bc ... using a high bc ... i like that idea too..

thank you for all the input it all will be helpful as i get into the testing stage i have some componets on hand but will be making an order soon... hope i don't run out of time

I've extenively experimented shooting the Berger 52 Match bullet and found RAMSHOT BIGGAME powder to produce the best velocity without pressure signs.
My pet load is 41.o gr. @ 3770 fps

i thought i found a bullet that works in my barrel so good i had to get more... the problem was the bullet [nosler solid base match #25857] hasn't been in production since the 90's which i didn't know at the time ... lol's this will be a waste of time
after shooting most of what i had which was unopened.. i acquired a couple hundred+ more .. but they came from different place an the boxes where opened..after measure every one i had three groups to load up... i haven't had the chance to test them an will be using them in a match 'maybe'.. once these are gone i don'think i'll find anymore.. but that doesn't matter i only needed them for this one time, hoping they'll work.. lol's
having back-up bullets loaded #2250 hornadys i'm not all that worried

RE-15 didn't work for me.. i tried that powder with both bullets i also tried the bergers in 52gr M not so good either, i now have a box of 60gr bergers an box of 60 hornady bullets that didn't work either.. 'desperate for a long shot i took a chance'.. 1 - 14

what worked was varget w/ the hornadys an IMR 4064 w/ the noslers both have the same poi.. i didn'think i had time to order the newer noslers in 52gr which are the only ones in .224 they have listed .. i should have... 'dumb' an will next time around

tuesday coming is my last chance to test them.. i be in Pa. next saturday

My Ruger No. 1 in 22-250 has liked 52 SMKs over 35 gns. IMR 4064. That is my target load since I have to use lead free bullets for hunting in California. But, the new Hornady 35 NTXs over 36.5 gns. of 4064 has become my replacement for the ground squirrels. 500 is simple if the wind stays calm.

Good luck,

Dane

Howdy !

For use on something like groundhogs, a notional 24" .224" cal 1-14 barrel chambered for .22-250 would put only just enough KE on the animal 500, when shooting 55s. That would be pretty much @ the sensible extreme for such a combo. There wouldn't be what I'd call " excess KE " on-tap on-tap...
IMHO.

A .22-250 in a 1-12 format shooting a bullet like Sierra's 65 SPBT might finesse the KE a bit further, but everything has its limits.

A couple more grains of powder in a .224" cal wildcat, and a longer ( say 28 - 29" barrel ); would help
bias the equation to the point where a clean kill @ 1,000 would be plausible. Such a rifle woudl still be fine for use @ closer ranges.

If graduating to a 6mm cartridge, I'd recommend at least the samecase capacity, if not more.
Yes, some of the other well-known 6mm ( smaller capacity cases ) have been utilized successfully.
But... those are often operated w/ more frenetic loads, and in those cases where that is done, case life suffers. Again, IMHO. " You pays yo' money.... "

As for powders... in my large case capacity .224" cal wildcat; I shot WW760 and VV160 under 55s in a 24" 1-14. From a 28" 1-8, I shot AA3100 powder. I don't go so much for pure vel as I do great accuracy.

thanks for the info... i am thinking 22Br soon but i have something like a dasher in the back of my mind
after next saturday coming it may be a little more clear

the 22-250 is a one time thing with this nosler 25857 ... unless it really works out an i find a supply
but its easier to go with the #2250 hornady they almost shot in the same hole... its out past 300 getting to 400 an 500 is when you lose it as a bench rifle

Factory TIKKA 595 master sporter 1:14 x 23-1/2" bbl. w/ NXS 5.5-22
Pet load BERGER Varmint 50gr. seated 3 thou from rifling, Lapua brass, CCIBR-2, 38.0 RL15
Excellent velocity of 3830 fps with nice horizontal bullet spread.
Groups @ 100yds. measure in the low .2's or better
This recipe is capable of increased powder charges , up to 38.7 which produces higher velocities but produces unacceptable vertical spreads.
This load is limited to 450 yds. with bullet energy very depleted.
I'd suggest the BERGER VARMINT 55 gr. flat base for 500 yd distances with greater energy.
Enjoy <_>

results were good... to 300yrds
the nosler 25857 load was 4064/35.5 7 1/2 br primer... out to just on the lands
hornadys 2250 wasn't the best of the two but v.close with the same load
....." i'd love to get more of those 25857's"......
but again i got blown off the 500yrd 'as usual' wind practice this yr lol's
i scored 50's at 100.. lowest 46 at 300.. an only high numbers at 500 was 24 out of possible 50 on ea target

the new build is in progress... 6X47L .. i'll do a 22Br some day

"there is alway another day"

Take a look at the 53gr. Vmax.

Twist is marginal, but MAY stabilize if you really push it hard.

Howdy !

IF you must use a 55, then use a Sierra or Hornady SPBT or polymer boat tail.

IF you can make any 60s shoot, they migh give you a slight edge in wind, over the 55s.

I tried the .224" cal 55s @ 500 thang, then re-barrelledto a 28" 1-8 and shot 75s out as-far-as 1,000.

For powders, give WW760 ( H414 same thing ) a try. ALso, VV160. These will give you high load densities.
LR Mag primers with those powders, fer sher.

actually my barrel handles 55gr bullets well But it looses velocity past 300.... the 52 an 53 gr bullets work best. i know the bc of the 55's Should be better... but i make more holes at 500 in the paper with the 52-3's.. go figure
i've not yet tried 8208... i'l have to give it a try...

i'm working on a new build for now..... so 8208 an -250 testing will be closer to spring time

the 22-250 that i had for years, until the throat was toast, was a remington varmint special. i shot alot of bullet/powder combos at the time and i never found a bullet that would outshoot the 55 gr. nosler ballistic tip with imr 3031 in that gun, small ragged holes @ 100 and on calm days alot of 2 inch groups were shot @ 500 with them. the only other bullet that came close was the 52 gr a-max. Some dont like the nosler ballistic tips but for that gun, with 36 grains of 3031 it was one of the most accurate factory rifles i ever owned.

I have had good results with H380 with the 50 gr. SBK or the NoslerBT.
