.45 Auto pistol

"625 Smith and Wesson. Can not go wrong "
I agree 100% on the 625 and the older 25 for a great wheel gun.

I like my Ruger SR1911. This is his first handgun. He wants a .45. Custom guns are nice, but $600 for a Ruger makes sense. Not hard to sell if he finds something else later.

Kimber however if can up his budget some a Dan Wesson Valor - great pistol.

I have some really nice 1911s in .45ACP but my favorite stock gun is a DW Valor, it isn't "stock" anymore but none of my 1911s are. Someone mentioned the Springfield Range Officer and, while under the 1K budget, all I have dry fired in local shops were in serious need of a good trigger job which will run between $300 - 350 by the time a totally new ignition set is installed. Another Dan Wesson to consider is the Heritage and those retail for about $1,100.

If a 1911 style pistol isn't a necessity, have him look at the CZ 97B which is well within his budget. If he likes it and wants it upgraded, he can send it to Cajun Gun Works for the "E Package" and get it converted to SAO at the same time. I have a 97B that was completely worked over by CGW and its accuracy and trigger pull rivals my best 1911s.

GLOCK 30!

it's the only reasonable choice for me if your buying a 1st hand gun. You can convert it cheaply to a 10MM if you want real power! and it will go through elements and keep running better than ANY 1911 ( I love my 1911's but they will never be as reliable as a glock)
There is so many hand guns out there you can buy a 1911 for number 2 or 3 or 68 depending on how many you want. buy the gun that can do it all first.

dragman,
bring your recommended "combat tupperware" to the arctic & see how it performs at 30 below zero!!

I don't think I have shot mine past 18 below. It just doesn't get that cold here. but I have seen glocks go through a fire and come out shooting when other guns couldn't

Mine worked fine in Upstate NY for 20 years of patrol...even when it hit -20F during qualification...ya, that day sucked.

+1 I was a "dug in deep" Colt guy. Then I was urged to try some others. My Glock 41 shoots great and don't forget that it holds 13 rounds. Nice little bonus. Josh ps Snert: I feel for you. Hope you had your longjohns on!
