Which mid-priced .45 ACP to buy/which to avoid?

I have a SR 1911 and I love it. Trigger improved after it was shot a bit. I wish Ruger offered a replacement adjustable rear sight that fit the existing dovetail slot.

My 2 cents, I am a 1911 person but, I think you should buy what you like and feels good in your hand that fits into your intended purpose. Don't let price drive the train, wait a month or 2 and get what you really want. I would also look at used pistols that are in like new condition. It was probably bought on impulse and the original owner never shot it enough to figure out what loads shot well or mastered it well enough to know if it was accurate.

I should also comment on the HK USP. I bought one of the early models. Grip was a bit fat, but it was EXTREMELY accurate. Guys with custom 1911s couldn't believe how accurate. I won bets with that thing. Magazines were very nice. I really liked that gun, though it was pretty bulky.

But, after a few thousand rounds, the firing pin assemly broke, and the back half of that blasted rearward, cracking off a piece of the slide near the hammer. I know it sounds impossible but that really happened (oh and that metal piece hit me in the face). Gun went back to HK USA, which sent it back to Germany, because they had never seen such a failure. About a month later I got the gun back with a new slide and firing pin. The new slide had no serial number because that is all done by machine, and apparently there was not way to customize the process to put an OLD serial number on the slide. There was a note from HK engineer saying that, as far as they knew, this was the only customer HK USP in the world without a serial number on the slide....

I will second the MAC suggestion for budget 1911's. I didn't even want to look at one, but did, just being friendly with the gentleman at the gun shop. It went home with me and has been reliable and accurate with great slide to frame fit and a pretty good looking finish. It is the blued American Classic II model.

How "mid" is the pricing of a Dan Wesson Valor? Because I'd be looking that way. 90% or more of the quality of a full custom at less than half the price of a Nighthawk or top end Wilson.

I love my para p14 ltd (Canadian). I bet I have put at least 250k rounds through it in my ISPC days.
It did require some new parts over the years, but I expected that shooting 500 to a thousand rounds a week.
I picked up a second one used for under 500 bucks. They are heavy and require large hands

Not sure why more Para Ordinance aren't mentioned? I love my P-14 Limited Edition. If you have big hands with long fingers (like me) its the perfect fit. Also having 14 rounds of 45 ACP is a plus.

I've got a Springfield double-stack that I Love but takes larger hands. A Dan Wesson ECO for CCW. If it's just for punching paper, I'd go for the Range Office in 9MM though.

Just because and do to the fact it felt and handled naturally I went forward with the Tisas Zig M45 Commander. Had a chance to check one out at the range one day and was curious enough I needed to see for myself what 4 bills will get you. FFL just took possession of it today and I will pick up on Monday. Mostly nothing but good reviews on this Turkish mfg. Plan is to put this to the test this summer. Only down fall I could see was having to deal with a warranty issue, and that is one item at the top of my list when making a purchase. The cost is well worth the risk with this one as anyone with enough purchases will find even with the best warranty policy sometimes you just have to send it down the road.

I’ve got a friend that’s wanting to buy a .45 ACP, just for punching holes in paper and the occasional zombie. I’m no help as I’m a revolver S&W guy. What’s y’alls opinion on what to buy/what to avoid? And he wants a full-size, no compacts. Thanks.
Back in my early days there was a lot of not so great 1911's out there with softer than needed slides and frames along with inferior barrels that became inoperable in a short time. Now with international manufacturing standards things have gotten better per quality. If in the future an upgrade like new fitted barrel and bushing or just a link and bushing could be a consideration then a person might look on the cheaper side of availability.

Interesting, an unusual failure.

A lot of great responses, and I sent him a link
so he could read all of y’all’s responses. I know he likes the Springfield Range Officer and is partial to the Sig P220. There’s been a lot of input on the Springfield RO, but not much on the P220 (maybe I overlooked it). Any thoughts on the Sig P220?
I have a Sig P 220, and just love it. Accuracy is excellent.

Pistol preference is highly individual.
When my daughter got her CCP i went with her shopping. She kept looking at me to tell her which one to get. I kept telling her, it was her choice, what fit her.

She ended up with a Springfield XDS.

Pistol wise, your not going to get a better trigger than a 1911.
While Glocks are dependable, they don't "fit" me right, and i hate the trigger.
The Walther PPQ is getting good reviews for accuracy, and the trigger.
