Which mid-priced .45 ACP to buy/which to avoid?

I own several 1911's, and agree the Springfield Range Officer is hard to beat. But my two favorites are a Walther PPQ 45 and the FNX 45 Tactical. I shoot both these with a suppressor, and they are a hoot!

I am a 1911 guy. Put over 5000 rounds through (All hardball equivilant, 18# spring.) my Dan Wesson Pointman. It was one of the first 5 Bob Serva made in Norwich, NY. I have hunted with it and it has filled the freezer on more than one occasion. Finally a couple of my friends/family convinced me to try a Glock G30s and now that is what I carry.

When I buy 1911 mags, even the expensive ones, my 1911 does not like all of them. Every Glock mag I have ever bought runs as perfect as the two that came with the gun. The trigger was an easy transition. It does not stay on the 100 yard Ram like the 1911 but it holds its own past 25.

Like wiuprof I also have a Blackhawk Convertible and my wife has a Marlin Camp Carbine. One Square deal B feeds'em all.

Itis a great time to buy a 45, seems like everybody at the gun counter wants a 9. Probably some great deals on used stuff if you can look around a little when things get "less distanced".

If you are going to own one .45 make it a 1911. Be sure it has decent sights, glow in the dark or light gathering are not needed / desired. Then spend a few dollars getting a clean crisp 3 lb trigger job on it.

You did not mention his pistolero experience. If he is a novice with pistols, the 1911 can be intimidating to him. If he does not enjoy it, or can't hit what he is aiming at, the pistol will likely become a safe queen. Maybe you can guide him, or suggest a decent instructor to help him acclimate.

Aw, C'mon! You're going to make it thru just fine! You should wait, tho. All these panic buyers are driving up prices. They'll dump their new guns when this is over.
i think ur right about waiting to get a Glock. i wouldnt even go in the store and look at one now.

I have a para ordinance wide body P-13 that I really like. However they made one called the LDA 1911 and it was the lightest double action pull in a semi auto I ever felt. At the time I didn't have the cash but they can be found for well under a 1000.00. My gun is so old it was when they sold them in kit form so mine is all colt and a gold cup barrel with some added parts and some I made myself like the spring guide is made of oil lite material and a titanium firing pin I also made for it. It really shoots good.

Like a couple of previous posts, I'd suggest a Taurus. I picked up a second hand model back in 2011, and it has never failed to function once. It eats everything it's ever been fed, I picked up some 45 ACP ammo at a gun show (it was so cheap, I couldn't refuse it) the stuff was cheaper than once fired brass and it ate everyone of these. This stuff had a 185 grain bullet of unknown pedigree, and I think it was loaded with coal dust and dirt as the propellant, the gun was filthy afterwards but it functioned with everyone of these. I did some load development a while back with it. At 10 yards it put my final test loads through a single ragged hole, (6.5 grains of Unique with a 230 grain TC bullet from a LEE mold, sized .451"). This is a gun that I would trust my life too.

I should mention that I have and shoot a few other 45s.
hK USP
Colt Gold Cup
Colt Double Eagle
Sig Sauer Nightmare

I should also mention that my favorite most accurate gun to shoot is a Beretta Storm, in 40 S&W. I don't know how I got so lucky with this gun but it fits my hand perfectly and shoots well for my purposes.

I agree with the Boss. No Kimbers! A friend bought one and had nothing but trouble!

That Sig Nightmare I imagine is one of your favorites as well as that Gold Cup.

Since the intended use is paper punching, I'd advise a steel pistol. Any good 1911 would do, as would a CZ 97. Sig P 220's are nice but are fairly light due to the alloy frame and have a high bore axis, making them have more muzzle flip. Any polymer 45 like a Glock are better for more experienced shooters.

I love my para p14 ltd (Canadian). I bet I have put at least 250k rounds through it in my ISPC days.
It did require some new parts over the years, but I expected that shooting 500 to a thousand rounds a week.
I picked up a second one used for under 500 bucks. They are heavy and require large hands

You probably should go to a large gun store so you can handle many different brands. See which one calls your name once you handle it. Then you will have a strong opinion about what's the right choice - for you.
