40XBR

Im not a benchrest shooter and i dont have a 222 benchrest rifle. But i want one! When i was a kid my dad gave me a 788 222. My father laoded and shot his for over 40 years now. He shot more woodchucks than ill probably ever get to see. In the 70’s he said he could scoop a shell full of 3031 full and seat a bullet. I did try h322 and shot quite a few coyotes w 52gr speer hp,worked really well. But for a hunting load in the deuce my loading scale stuck on 20ish gr 4198 and a 50gr hornady spsx. I never strayed from it in over 20yrs varminting cuz i cldnt better it! Sweet spot in my heart and the rifle and load that made me the reloader i am today. Sincerely. 4198 322 4895 and even blc2. Old school still rocks

Recently bought a nice 40XBR in .222 and looking for load suggestions to start with. I have some IMR4198 and BLC(2). Bullets range from 50gr vmax to 52gr SMK.
Try a Hornady 50 grain SP. Built to stabalize in a 14 twist. Same with the Sierra 50 grain SP. Old scholl bullets work in old school rifles

I built a 40XBR clone last year. Used original stock as a pattern. Mack Bros action, Bartlein 1-12” barrel. It shoots crazy good with Berger 52s and H322. I tested all the go-to powders for 222. All gave great accuracy. H322 won only due to having 8 lb jug already.

Absolutely beautiful

While not a 40XBR it is a 222 and it deserved a trip to the range, I had forgotten that I had switched the Redfield 3200 to another rifle and put this 16x 6400 on the 222. Once I final tightened the scope ring caps and got her zeroed she liked the Sierra 52 hpbt but think I will try some Barts or BIBs and see just how good it gets.

In the '70's I shot my smallest group ( in the 2's, pre SR BR competition) with a mdl 700 Varmint Deluxe in .222 using 50 gr. Hornady SX over 18.2 gr. IMR 4198. It is what got me into BR. The 24x M8 on it may have been a factor, and the old Hoppes front rest and sand bags of the era didn't help.
