35" long barrel????

Has anyone played with a 35" long (finished) barrel in the 6 Dasher? Would I gain enough velocity to make this a better 1000 yard rifle? What are the pros and cons? I noticed they have some in stock on Bruno's web site. I would think a barrel larger then 1.250 straight might be better to keep barrel heat and whip down. Doug

I had a 6br on a 35" Krieger. I was getting 3025fps from a standard 6br load. It was nice, but out also weighed in @ 25lbs.

I have a 30" on my Dasher and can get 3060 fps with 103 gr. Vapor Trails without any pressure. The real reason I wanted a 30" was if the barrel turns out to be one that shot great, I would have room to chamber it again! So all I can say is try it you might like it.Oh and with a 1.25 straight you can go as short as you can.

I've heard of some folks that tried that. I think it worked out ok for them precision-wise, but I haven't been adventurous enough to try it myself.

One of the ways to solve the whip problem is to use a barrel block, say 5" or 6", which free floats the barrel and the action in the stock. It essentially shortens the barrel to 29" or 30" depending on the length of the block. This puts you in the same ballpark as the rest of the folks shooting F-Class or long range benchrest.

The Dasher has a multitude of records in many shooting disciplines using a variety of barrel lengths. Richard Schatz set a 1,000 yard record shooting the 6mm Dasher through a 26" barrel, yet many of us use 29" or 30" almost as a standard for the 6mm BR-type cartridges for long range competition.

I suggest letting your barrel and loading parameters set your velocity range by testing.

It is not only about whip in the barrel but balancing it in the stock. You would need a 40 inch plus stock for it to balance and track. It would be hard to make weight for any class with the stock and a barrel that long. Matt

Sounds to me, there are more reasons not to go that long. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel, but wanted to hear what others have seen while shooting with barrels longer then 32 inches. Not sure the Stolle Panda would even be able to handle that kind of wt with out a barrel block. Thanks for your replies. Doug

You could do a barrel block on a "bull pup"stock design. Some what new territory for Benchrest.? Maybe somebody has tried it. I'm not a learned member. Desert Tech makes something like that.

I called Kelbly's about barrel length and the Stolle Panda,,, according to them it will handle it.

Never saw a barrel block in a light gun shoot competitive. Hard to make weight with a 17 pound gun and have the block and stock heavy enough. Now in the 60 pound plus heavy guns where you can run a 3 inch square block 9 inches long with a 1.450 diameter barrel that is another story. Matt

Barrel whip is good, harmonics are necessary to tune a barrel. Forget the stiffer=better BS, total internet BS. A panda would be fine with a 35" barrel. But like the others have said, its a whole package. Other things come into play. Balance, center of gravity exc. Also, at some point the powder is burned and the bullet will start to slow down in the bore. I bet youd find that spot in a 35" dasher. I believe 28-28.5" to be the sweet spot for accuracy in the dasher. I kind other think a heavy palma countour may be a better shape and plan to try one.

Your barrel is only as good as the powder burn going down the tube. A low powder round, like the dasher can only hold so much powder....if you use it all up in the barrel and you still barrel left, you start to loose velocity. Same as a short barrel with a mag cartridge. You are still burning powder as it leaves the muzzle...nice flash but wasted power.

QL for what it is worth with 4350 powder 40" and it is still gaining speed . You will have a gained more speed with 5" of barrel as you gained going from a 6 BR to a dasher

Thank you all for your replies. I placed an order for 2 krieger 4 groove 7.5 twist barrels for my 6 Dasher. I am using a Krieger right now that not only shoots extremely well but does not carbon or copper fowel. I have 2 Bartlin barrels, one with a 29 and the other a 30" finished length. With these 2 barrels I average about 2985 FPS while using H4350 and the Ber 105's. The Krieger 30.5 finish length averages 3045 FPS while using Re 16 and the Berger 108. I am not stuck on speed but knowing the bullet has less time to be affected by wind I feel to be a plus. I have ofton thought about the burning rate verses the barrel length. If the 28 to 28.5' length is the optimum length for the burning rate, it will be worth a try. That would also help to make wt for the light gun. My light gun Panda with a McMillan F class stock is a pain to make wt while using a 30" #17 hvy varmint contour on it.
I appreciate all the different findings etc. I only have 2 seasons in 600 and 1000 yard shooting. I know there are some very experianced and knowlagable shooters posting, and if I can learn the easy way that is what I prefer. More money for components. Thanks. Doug
