35 grain VMAX IN A .223 With a 1-9 1-12 twist 24" Barrel

Has anyone got any experience with them they can share? so far out of my Rem. 700 5R,.223with a 1-9 twist using 27.6 grains of Bench Mark my groups are running 3/8-7/16 @ 100 yards, want to try TAC, X-terminator and Reloder 7,do you think they would work better in my Rem700 Varmint Special .223with a 1-12 twist?, Thanks ,in advance for the feed back.

Those are better than I would have expected. Any reason you favor such a light bullet? And yes, I think they have the potential to do their best in a 12T barrel, even better in my 14T Cooper.

I wasn't smart enough to say it about over-spinning bullets by shooting them in a faster twist than they were designed for. That other person said "the tuning window is tighter". And that is exactly what I have found.

I don't know what elevation you shoot at. Something like the Berger 73 gr BT Target should do very well in that 9T barrel. At sea level they would be slightly unstable, but 1750 and above they would be fine.

I think you’re doing well with those 35s. I bought 500 of them to shoot at 100 yards because they were cheap. They’ll work in both guns. Better, maybe, in the 1/12.

I agree with all the above. What you’ve proven already is some fantastic shooting! I would add that if you have the itch to try a different powder, and your barrel is on the shorter end of the spectrum, I’d try the fastest acceptable powder you have on hand and go from there.

Spin or rotation while shooting a 35 gr bullet a near speed of light velocities does not work well with a nine twist. Spin is calculated as Velocity (FPS) X 720 / twist (9 or 12 in your case). I'll use a velocity of 3500 fps for this calculation keeping in mind it's probably a bit low.

Example: 3500 X 720/9 = 280,000 RPM , or 3500 X 720/12= 210,000 RPM.

So shooting your 9 twist and using a very conservative 3500 fps you can see that you are at or beyond the RPM limit for typical Hornaday bullets. Other bullets that are not thin skinned varmint bullets such as target bullets will have better RPM ratings, upwards of 310,000 RPM, maybe more.

Like the tires on your car, every rotational object has an RPM that it likes best. These are the harmonics, and if you are not spinning the bullet at it's favorite harmonic, it's not going to fly it's best.

My 9 twist seems to like the 53 V-Max and shoots it to extreme precision, while my 8 twist .223 prefers a 69 to 73 gr.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Jepp and others thanks for the reply, I am on Cape Cod so on the good days we are at sea level, on the not so good days we are below it. Just for the record I dont necessarily favor such light bullets, but am always curious about the lesser used componets, for years I used 52 grain Speer or Serria HPTBT bullets in our weekly matches and like everyone else I had excellant results with them. What brought me to the 35 grain v max was watching Johnys Reloading Bench and his vid using 40 grain Noslers with reloder7. I tried 40grain V Max's and had excellent results with them, sub, 1/2"in my two bolt guns I have been toying with the idea of getting a .204 but thought , why not try the 35 grainers in the .223 first, so here I am. I will probably use my remaing stock in my 12 twist and .222, thanks guys for the input, much appreciated.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^......and you’ll have to buy a thinner cleaning rod and brushes!
I don’t think I ever saw a prairie dog on Cape Cod. Chipmunks, yeah, but they’re too cute to shoot. Will they let you shoot invasive species? Seals, I mean. They ruined the stripper fishing!

Thankfully he uses Hornady bullets which apparently are better constructed than those cheap “horn-a-day” ones.

no more seal shooting, used to pay for my shot shells with seal noses. No no more shot shells, bass or flounder, but hey it's fun to watch the kids and fishermen get attacked when they go to the pier, thesummer traffic is slowed considerably by the turkeys too. Can't seem to find anyone getting good accuracy from the .204, on line anyways
