223 with 1-9 twist, need loads

I just picked up a Remington 700 5r mil-spec in 223 and it has a 24 inch 1-9 twist, So As I have never loaded for this caliber and I bet there is a few pros on this website. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on where to start, I'm kind of thinking 69grn matchking! Let me know please.

Haven't tried the heavier stuff in my Savage LRPV, but the following are 3 of the loads that are excellent in my 9 twist 26 in barrel, in the order listed ):

52gr Sierra Hollow Point Boat Tail
powder: I 4064
charge: 25gr

55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
Powder: I 4064
Charge: 24.8gr

The 1:9 twist should shoot bullets up 75 gr. I definitely would work up a load for the 69 matchking. In my AR15 I prefer Vaget for this bullet and use 25.5 gr. You should be able to load hotter in your bolt gun.

If your rifle is 1-9' you should due fine with up to 77gr bullets with either Varget or R-15, I have shot 75 A-Max's and 77 Sierra MK's without any trouble in the 2870fps range out of all of my 1-9's.

Now for the question that I have,'Are yo sure it's 1-9' twist 24' barrel'? As the New 2009 Remington Catalog and the web site does not list a 1-9' twist barrel at 24'.,Catalog page 104, all Rifle Chambering) If it's a 1-12' you'll have to get by with the 69's.

The Rem 5R is a special order rifle not listed. My 5R 308 is 11.25 twist which you also will not find at the Rem site. I did find a listing for the 223 5R giving a twist of 1:9. Too bad they didn't make it 1:8 so you could shoot 80grain bullets.

Thanks for the help guys, and yes I am sure it is a 24inch 1-9 twist these are a special run from what I understand they did not even make it to the catalogs, they are only making 250 every 3 months.

You should be able to stabalize either Sierra or Nosler 69 gr match bullets. The Hornady 68 gr one as well. The 75 gr Hornady non A-max is also easily done. Some barrels will stabalize the 75 gr A-max with a 1:9 twist, mine won't. I have had excellent results with Ren 7 1/2 Primers, Varget 25.5 grs with the 68 & 69's, and 24.5 grs with the 75's. I keep the 68 & 69's at magazine length and the 75's are 0.020' off the rifling. Best of luck.

My AR 1 N 9 loves Varget 25.5 grs and the Sierra 69 MK also. I shoot groundhogs with it also and it blows golf ball size exit holes. You should be able to push that bullet faster in your Rem. 700 with 24' tube.
