1/9 twist .223..?

I have a Rem 700 5R milspec 223 with a 9" twist. The 69 gr SMK seem to work very well in my rifle and I have tried the 77 gr Fed GMM (77 SMK) and they seemed to work ok at 100 yds too. I haven't tried the 77's out further than that but they didn't keyhole at 100 at least.

Thanks everyone , I am still on the fence on buying another rifle , it's hard to justify right now.. Like alot of you I am running out of room in the safe...

Can anyone help me out here.? I was thinking of picking up a new Savage 12 fv in .223 with a 26 inch 1/9 twist barrel. What's the heaviest bullets 1/9 will shoot...? I like the 77gr SMK...

Thanks in advance.
Shawn
I've shot up to 80 with great success.

I, too, have a Remington 700 5R, 223. It shoots the 53 grain V-Max very well!!!! My favorite Ground Squirrel bullet. But, lately, I've been wanting to try a "heavier, Long-Range" bullet..... I have Berger 70,& 73's, Nosler & Sierra 69's. And a few others. Any info on loads for these & others would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Guys!!!!

Nosler 77 CC and 77Smk' will run excellent in that barrel. I have a 20" that I run 68 Hornaday bthp in out to 600 great for steel shooting. I will be going to the 70 Nosler RDF when I run out. They should be able to get me out to 700-800 yards on steel. This is my PRS trainer that takes some wear and tear off my main rifle.

I have been thinking and need to amend my posts above. 75 grain may shoot great in your chamber/throat may not even fit in someone else's rifle. I have a Savage 12 FT/R in .223. Brand new and with hand loaded 75 gr. Amax, and Black Hills 75's the rounds got stuck in the chamber and separated with powder spill all over when I tried to open and eject. Now, four years later, my best results are with Berger 80 VLD's. I can attribute this to throat erosion after about 7500 rounds or so.

Without articulating this above, it is why I suggest that the OP draw his own conclusions after his own testing.

I have a Dakota 223 with factory Douglas 1-10 twist. I won a 600 yard match on the 300 yard target at 600 yards. I was shooting 80 grain Sierra. Our elevation is 5300 ft. Thin air helps. Score was 100 8X that tied range record. You never know till you try! Tom
Do you know if the Dakota Arms Varminter comes with a 1-10 twist? Found one too gorgeous to resist. Dakota and Nesika are both seemingly unreachable right now.

The one I have has a Dougles 1-10 twist barrel. I think they may be shut down since Remington owned them. My rifle is a varmintor with a lighter barrel. Don’t know if heavy ones have same twist. They are really nice rifles, looks and function! Tom

The other year, i picked up the predecessor to the FV for my wife. Savage 110 FP.
F- plastic stock
P- police
24" Varmint contour 1:9 on the long action.
No pilars in the plastic stock. Too early.
I'm using Starline brass, Fed 205M primers.
Typically shoot the 69gr SMK over a charge of Alliant Power Pro 2000MR.
Have used the 52gr, and 69gr TMK.
Picked up 2 boxes of 70gr RDF to play with.

Rifle shoots fairly accurate. The pre Accutrigger, trigger on this one was set at 6.5lb when i picked it up. Down to 1.5 now.
Whomever it was that thought a long 110 action would be great with the 223, really needs to reconsider that!

I have the Model 12 FCV
It's a laser with 69gr TMK's/MK's, 73gr BT Targets w/Varget
Currently working out a load for the 70gr VLD over N140
