338 Win Mag 1000 yard build questions

If you ever find the quality brass you are looking for and want to divest of the 'culls', let me know.

I'm currently reloading 200 gr Speer Hotcores into elk medicine for a pre-64 Winchester. Not real picky about brass and will be using IMR7828 as it shoots really well in my 7mm RM. (And I have a lot)

Anyone else use that powder in a 338 WinMag?
If I have anything that can help administer treatment to your elk patients I'll definitely let you know. I have some old stock new W-W Super 338 WM brass that I've measured and it looks like it's way better than the winchester brass of today's manufacturing. I'm going to gather some new 7RM brass from a few manufacturers and start sizing them to see what considerations may be needed for neck thickness.

I have a Ruger 77 338 win mag, and it is the best elk rifle that has ever been invented in my opinion. But if i were looking for a 338 that factory ammo was available for to shoot to 1000 it would be a 338 RUM.

It's easier to find 338 WM loaded ammunition and at a far better price. This build will be fed a diet of nothing but hand loads and the barrel life on the 338 WM should be better aswell. Utility was the only reason I wanted it to be able to fire a factory round offering. I can find a box of 338 WM within a 30 mile radius. 338 RUM is a different story all together. The 338 WM seems very balanced in terms of powder usage, power, availability and range.

Didn't Rick Bin work on that cartridge a while back?
Myself and the Hornady 1K shooters started the 300 PRC in 2007. When the PSR I solicitation came out for SOCOM they invited "other " calibers to play the game. AI teamed with Hornady and submitted both the 30 and 338 versions. They were designated the 300AI and 338AI. The 300 moved on to became a standard caliber. The 338 while very good didn't have the same glamor as the 338 Lapua. Based on cost vs performance they both are a bargain.

As has been said. 338-300PRC
It was submitted to USSOCOM as an alternative to the 338 Lapua. 80% of the performance at 60% of the cost.
I have reamers and dies.
The more I read, the more I like this idea. You're a bad influence Dave lol. I'm not in a hurry for this build, I may discuss this with you later.

That’s good stuff. I ended up with a reamer print marked 338 Hornady Match probably 10 years ago when I asked PTG about 338/375 Ruger reamers. I’d have to check, but I believe it was essentially a 338/300 PRC. I ended up with a 375 necked down to 338 with no other changes.

I think for my needs and wants the 338 WM with proper free bore for flat lines, sierra, and berger 250 range bullets is just the ticket. I have some good 7mm RM brass on order, and continue the search for more 338 WM brass. I have put a lot of consideration in to other cartridges but feel I've landed back on the 338 WM too many times for balance not to stick with it.

I am currently in the process of building something like this. My gun is a 338 win mag match chamber made to my specs. Pacnor 28.00"x 1:10x .950" heavy barrel, kahntrol brake threaded 3/4-24, remage nut, rem 700 trued action, Jewell hvr trigg, near 25 moa base, heavy badger USMC rings, tighter tolerance ptg bolt, Burris xtr5-25x50 non illum scope. C o a l will fit an AI mag with about .100" room to spare. Already weighs 14 lb, should weigh about 20 when I'm done. Have not picked out stock or bipod yet. Waiting for Santa Claus

You state your rifle is intended for target work.
I think bag control of your rifle will be a major concern. A heavy weight bullet in a .300wsm is not easy to master and the 250-300 gr bullets in a .338 will exacerabate the problem.
Maybe some target shooters can address this better than I. A hunting rifle is another animal.

I'm going for a jack rifle, not a master of any specific purpose. Regardless it will be big medicine and fun to shoot. I've shot heavy 300WM at 1000 yard steel matches bipod/rear bag with good results. There is alot of satisfaction watching the plates swing/dance when the rest of the squad barely makes it move. Sounds like a sledge hitting instead of a jewelers hammer

You wouldn't care to send me a copy of you reamer print would you?
