338 wildcats?

What is a good 338 Wildcat I can build of a 300 WM remington action? I have to rebarrel this rifle soon and thinking on going big bore. I use it out to 600 in f-class and have a place I can shoot 1200 out west. If not 338 what else do you recommend for my action?

I have always been a fan of the 338 Edge. It is esentially a 300 Remington Ultra Magnum necked up to a 338 Bullet.

338 WinMag with a long throat for long bullets.
338 WSM and 338 RemUltrag would be funny too.

Take a 10" or 8" twist. Depends on the bullets you want to use. I like the 250grain Scenar in the 338 Lapua.

you can't use a muzzle brake in f class. i think a 338 edge would have about 80 foot lbs. of recoil. after a couple of shots a wristrocket would seem like a better plan. :D :D :D cliffe

I think you will find that .338 cal is not permitted for F class comp, up to 8mm only.

Cliffe is right, the thing will like riding a wild horse, :o try a 7 mm of some description, a good one will outshoot a .338 anyday and You will be able to drive home after a 20 shot string!

PS: I built a 338 Edge on a Savage 7 Mag Long Action! Single Shot, awesome gun, very accurate and powerfull!

McGowan put the brake on it when they build the barrel! I told them I wanted the "best" for the gun as my shoulder is getting brittle these days!!!!!

I also have the shock recoil drilled in the stock and have the best pad on the stock!!!

It's everything they said it would be!

I just looked and up to 35 cal is legal. So nobody shoots a 338 without a brake huh? Makes me want to do it. But common sense will over come for now. What can I rebarrel this thing to that will have as good of barrel life and ballistics? I thought about 300 RSAUM, Making a 338 WSM, and even 325 WSM. I have always been the guy shooting the "cannon" with my 300 wm. I have a high recoil thresh hold. 80 rounds is nothing to me. I figured if I went 338 I would add about 2# more barrel weight and a heavier sniper fill stock and have a 16# rig. (I use it for tac matches too) But if that would be unshootable thats I'll go something differnt. I had all my 300WM stuff stolen out of my reloading location so I got to get new dies and brass anyway, thought it would be a good time to change cartridges.

As fond of wildcats as I am, I have to admit that (if magazine length limitations are not involved in the equation) the .340 Wby is hard to beat and brass can be made from several different cases from 7 STW to .375 H&H.

I think the 338 WSM with a long throat (S=0,23" + i=1,5°) would be the best for you.
No problem with COL and it fits your bolt face.

.338/300win mag is a great cartridge for you.

Edge requires gunsmithing work, new magazine box and maybe a follower to work correctly. Gotta widen them rails; then you go no room to seat your bullets...

necked up .300win case offers great versatility. Have fired the round in Rem 700 bdl barrel with 65gr xmr4350 and 250gr bullet and recoil is about like a .308 varmint special. At max load threshold, or where I was comfy, the charge was near listed max for the .340wby and .338 ultramag. More versatility than any of the big cases though...

Lots of potential and an easy wildcat to load.

Might look at the .300-338 with VLD bullets also. Velocity is one thing, but being able to seat the high BC bullets where you want and find a sweet spot with mild dose of powder might be a plan. Could always buy a new bolt body and go away from the Magnum arena altogether...

PTG bolt body and a 6mm XC or a .260 rem, .284win or try a .30/284... Lots of options, but 6mm with 107 or 115gr bullet and 38 some-odd grains of powder will give it all to you since you're intent is to punch paper anyway...
