338 Rem Ultra Mag.....

The long range bug has bitten my buddy john in western pa...The 6.5 X 284 is nice...But...He wants me to think about putting 338 RUM on a Magnum long action Savage...With two recoil reducers & a muzzle brake...custom stock etc..He wants to use the new 300 gr Sierra HPBT ...Comments thoughts about this project appreciated..Finished rifle w/scope should weigh about 18lbs..I thought I remembered someone here planning another rifle using that case or the 300RUM necked up..I want john to order the brass & dies to see how good the cases are before we start this project...mike in ct

Consider talking to Shawn Carlock - he's the guru for the .338 Edge, which is made from the .300 RUM brass, necked up. It has a bit more capacity than the .338 RUM - if you feel a need for more!

that is just incredible !!!...He shoots elk like we duff groundhogs...John is not really a hunter anylonger..He will pop off a round or two at a GH..if he is in the mood..this rig is just for shooting paper...He really wants to shoot to 5 inches at 1k yards..the wind be damned...I guess that is the bullet to use.[Sierra 300gr HPBT MK]..I need some info on the rate of twist for it..Ten twist is standard so 1 in 8 or one in nine should do the job in that big case....mike
