I just got a deal on a Winchester .300 Win Mag rifle with the Classic,pre-64) type action and a cheap factory plastic stock. I already own a .300 RUM, and several .300 Win Mags and some various short mags also. Looking for something a little bigger. I considered the .338 Lapua, but the RUM seems slightly better on paper. Will the action/boltface take the Ultramag? The dimensions of the cartridge faces seem comparable.
Here is my plan....Rebarrel to .338 RUM and restock with something that doesn't flop around when handled. The rifle would be used for hunting. I know, I've heard all the arguments against any/every magnum cartridge ever made. I just like experimenting and shooting something uncommon. Besides, my gunsmiths seem bored lately. What does everyone think?
