338 lupua improved

Anyone playing with the 338 lupua improved with the 300 grain bergers and RE33? and has anyone had any luck with the slower powders 50 bmg or H5010?

MY numbers are almost exactly the same as Toms. It gives me good speed with accuracy and no pressure. My groups have been 4 to 6 inches at 1000 with 5 shot groups. I run mine at 2993 and that is where it shot good. We also shot it in an Edge and got 3000 with 300 grain Bergers. Matt

What twist are you running Tom? and what barrel length? This is Paul from Idaho. You need to come over we'll go Find some Bears to pick on with these. I've built two know with 1-10 twist Hart barrels and one with a 1-9.5 rock creek haven't got a chance to break in the rock creek yet but looking forward to it. The first 1-10 I've played alot with the 250 grain bullets with RE-25 and had good luck. couldn't get my hands on the 300 bergers or the seirras for a long time but now i have some time to play.
I will see you over at one of the shoots i'm going to try to make a few but probly not all of them.
Sounds like Wayne will be over.

Alex I'm 10 to 15 in the lands. I could easily get 3100 or more. At 104 grains I was running 3040 and absolute no pressure. It shot really good at 103 and it was 2993. That's all I can push the 300 without getting slump. Matt

How are you seating them, and what kind of neck tention are you running are you single shoting them or mag feeding them? Do you still have your first gun, you did one on a weatherby am i correct? and then a custom? yours is also a 35 ddegree shoulder as well i beleave which should change anything to much.

Tom you shooting the OTM's? I am shooting the Elites first ones they came out with. I really like them. Really accurate and they open up on whitetails. Matt

What vel. are you getting and how is it shooting? I think Ashley was playing with that also haven't heard anything on it, i'll have to ask Dave i know Dave switch his rouge over to 338 limp i beleave last fall. He is running RE-25 with good results.

I did some max load testing in my 338LM AI. 29" 10 twist, 300 SMK. 50BMG was clean burning but the kernels are so big I ran out of case capacity quickly. 113 grains was reeeeeeeally compressed and was a hot load with 2930ish FPS. H1K at 96.5 grains gave 2873 FPS. Going to run Retumbo in the 100-102 grain range for 2900-2950 FPS. Wanting to try some N570 and check the temp sensitivity. I run on the hot side so a temp stable powder is a must for me.

In my 338 LM Improved, I use the 300 gr. SMks and 300 gr. Lapua Scenar's. (I have 300 gr. Berger's but have 200-300 more Scenar's to shoot before I try them).

I used to run 100.0 gr. Retumbo; it got me to the 2,900+ fps node.

I switched to and ran V.V. 570 and Rl-33. Both powders took me to the 3,000+ fps node without pressure (impressive in the Las Vegas summer). 100.0gr. V.V. 570 and 105.5gr. RL-33.

V.V.570 was very good (hard to load with those big kernels), but its impossible to find these days. Not to mention they bumped the price to over $40.00 per pound - OUCH in a rifle that gets exactly 70 rounds per pound of powder.

The more I shoot RL-33, the more I like it. in my rig it runs fast, and holds a tight water line at distances beyond 1,900 yards. It tolerates the summers here without issues and shoots more consistently in the summer than RL-25 ever did for me when I used it in my 7WSM.

So what barrel length and twist are you running and what are you getting for vel. with 105 grains? I'm just starting some tests and are running 103 grains and getting 2890.

I had found that a grain equals close to 50 fps average. With a 300 Berger 10 in the rifling I averaged 2932 with 102; 2993 with 103 and 3042 with 104. The load was still not hot and could have went more but I settled on the 2993 load because it shot really good at 1000 and I had first generation Bergers that slumped around 3000. This load shot 4 1/4 inches at 1000 for 5 shots and that is real good for a 338. I am running a 10 twist Krieger 1.450 diameter at 36 inches long. Matt

I'm running 103 with the 300 Bergers and i shot it last weekend at 100 it was right at 8" but that was off bipods with no back rest so i will run another test this weekend to see if it will do better this is just a long range hunting gun i'm playing with #6 taper Hart 1-10 twist on a stiller tac-338 in a HS tactical stock running a nightforce 5.5-22.
i really like shooting it very mild i have a brake on it.
I am going to run some tests with the 250 bergers also. I have played with them some with RE-25 but not the RE-33.

The R33 powder seems to be the go to Powder. It is great with the 300 Berger. Got more velocity and less pressure then the other good powders for the 338 IMP. The accuracy was great and the clicks out to 1700 yards did not change if it was zero or 40 degrees. I believe it will be a powder that is not so temp sensitive. I have not shot in the heat because it is a hunting gun. Matt

Mr Matt, would it be possible to post a pic? This rifle sounds very interesting, are you running a barrel block on it? Im guessing it wont quite agg with your .300 WSM? lol

Not sure if you were asking me, but my tube length is 32" it has 1:10 twist, with a badger break (that can be replaced with a suppressor (still waiting on my Stamp from BATFE).

I get 3,000+ fps from a 300 gr. Scenar using 105.5 gr. of RL-33 in my rig.

I am not very good at pictures but over on longrange hunting under the forum longrange hunting and shooting on page 11 there are pictures of my gun and gear driven table. It doesn't agg near as good as my 300 WSM. But in light gun this year we had a ton of wind and it would out agg it. Yes it has a barrel block. Matt
