.338 Lapua not accurate enough?

Earlier this year at an Oakridge match, an older guy shot F open with a no brake 338 Lapua..... If I remeber correctly...he was very adled at the end of his first twenty rd match. Heard him mention blurred vision.

His target was not impressive either..

The thing most of you are overlooking is, in most benchrest comps you "CAN NOT" use a brake. Shooting a 300gr bullet in a 338 as was mentioned is "NOT" something you want to do. That is why you don't see more of them. I don't think its a accuracy issue as much as a "Recoil" issue.

Name one.

Ok for IBS 1k and 600

Not sure about NBSRA or Penn.

That's what I'm saying.

I keep hearing recoil is tremendous. I have shot the 338 Lapua 1000`s of times and never was recoil a problem. I`ve shot it out to 2449yds. If the gun is to light then I could see recoil being to much but in say a 30lb gun or heavier, recoil isn`t nothing. I have read over the years that alot of 1000yd shooters tried it but went back to 30cal not because of recoil but because accuracy wasn`t there.

I guess I was wrong on the brakes in BR. dmoran clarified that you can use them as long as they vent forward and not to the rear.

I just priced it out a week ago and it was close to 1.25 a shot after you have your brass.

Granted shooting something smaller is far cheaper.

Guys I guess I misquoted dmoran when I said they had to vent to the front. That is "NOT" what he had said he also said they were permited but could not vent to the rear. It was my error and I appoligize to Donovan for that. He was right I just quoted him wrong. SORRY Donovan!!

After owning two 338L I will always have one. In my personal opinion the 338 lap imp is the best long range hunting rifle on the planet. Not starting a war just my opinion from harvesting a lot of animals at really long distances.

Any hunting rifle that requires a muzzle break is not a rifle I would take hunting. Just my preference.

No one has argued aginst the 338 as a great HUNTING round. The OP was questioning it as a LR BENCH round.

For 600 and 1K bench rest.....ther are many, many FAR better choices!!!

Why is that? Do you not have hearing protection? What about using a suppressor?

A lot of guides won't let you have a brake! I guess I'm gonna find out what the big deal is about a brake. I think the .338 lm is a great gun for what it was intended for.

Of course I have hearing protection. But I don't sit in a blind or tree stand all day. I hunt the high country on foot. Up there, you need all of your senses at full alert at all times. dont like artificial hearing either, like walker game ears.

shoot a round from a braked magnum while on a steep hillside. you'll see what I mean...
