33 Winchester load data

I have a high wall single shot chambered for the 33 Win & would like to shoot jacketed 180 - 185 gr bullets.
Published data starts at 200 gr. Does any one have any experience with the lighter bullets?

From the Hornady 9th edition, I found a starting charge of 35.1 grs. of H4895 with a 200 gr bullet. The max is 45.1 gr. for ~2200 fps. This would work perfectly with the Speer 200 gr. .338 bullet. I’ve loaded them down to this level in the .338 Win Mag and killed a bunch of deer with them. Also, this is a comfortable load to shoot and the Speer bullet is cheap compared to the 180/185 gr. bullets. If you think you just have to load a 180 gr., I would use the same data and just work up until I got a nice accurate load. Remember that this has never been a high pressure cartridge. As with the 200 gr., 2200 fps+/- is the goal.

You could possibly go higher, but you might want to preserve that old action/rifle. I would have a competent gunsmith look it over before going much over that. I would think that with the 180’s you could likely go to about 2300. See what the gunsmith says. Do you know the year of manufacture? Do you cast bullets?

Oh! In that case you can most likely go up to 24-2500fps. Contact MVA and see what they have to say. I was thinking it was an original Winchester.


This is a 250 gr. over 28 grs. IMR 4198 in the .338 Win Mag at 100 yards. Cast from #2 alloy. It is at 1636 av. fps. Still working it up. Tom at Accurate made the mould.
