284 Win Load Data

Could use some suggestions on load data. Rem M700 LA chambered with a PTG 7mm-284 Win no neck turn reamer with a 0.188" throat. I have necked up Lapua brass, H4831SC, H4350, CCI BR2, 200, 250 primers,162 Amax's on hand and 180 SMKs on order. Lots of data out there but I just want to make sure it's compatible with the 0.188" throat. As always thanks for any and all information.

.188 throat should work for you.

I tried H4831SC, I couldn't get the speeds I wanted, but my ES & SD were OK. Avg 2,800fps max.

A friend told me to try RL17. Results: 52.5 RL17, .050 off the lands, avg speed-2,925, SD & ES below 10 and very accurate. NO pressure signs

It works in my 284, RL17 is hotter than 4831SC. If you use RL17, start at 50.0grns and work up. I started getting pressure signs and a sticky bolt at 53.5. I was hitting 3,000fps but my accuracy node is 2,925fps.

30" 9 twist bull barrel.

I also had rounds loaded that were only .010 off the lands and closer. Definitely start at .050 and work in. Be careful working in and check your brass closely for pressure signs.

For 162s, it's a wash between h4350 and h4831sc. Would be better if there was something kinda in between.

4831sc: start at ~54 or 55gr. You'll likely wind up ~57gr

H4350: start at ~50gr. You'll wind up ~52.5 or 53.0gr

RL17: Same as H4350

180-class bullets:

4831sc: start at ~51-52, probably ending at 54 or 55

H4350: I argue is a bit too fast. Works but 4831sc is better. Start at 48gr

Thanks for the info guys. What type of primers are you guys using? Picked the extreme line of powders because of the temperature stability. Has anyone tried 4000-MR with the 180s? I live in eastern Kentucky and the weather goes from mid 90's to teens depending on the time of year.

What turbo54 said. I tried them all and came back to H4350 with the 162AMAXs. My soninlaw has a 284 and both of our guns shoot the same load and both guns love 52.5grs of H4350 with the 162s.

Both our guns are deadly accurate. This last weekend I shot out to a mile with mine (1788yds to be exact) and I was amazed at how accurate it was. I had 62 MOA on the scope to be dead on at that range.

I had my smith bore scope mine and it still looks great at 1600rds down the tube. I will never be without a 284 as long as I am doing longrange shooting.

Been shooting a .284 with a .188 Free Bore 30" barrel (only difference this is a .313 neck) for a few years now using Berger 180 VLDs and Hybrids, CCI BR2 primers and 4831SC. Got better velocity out of RL17, but could not get it to group as well as the 4831sc. Found a good node at 55.5 of the 4831SC. My buddy used the same reamer and found a good load around the same range. Velocity is around 2850. Very accurate. I would try out both powders. I have also shot the 168 VLD and found the same powder charge to work well for me as well. Remember this is my rifle and yours may be a bit different. Start at 54 and work up. I just re-barreled the rifle ( my old barrel had 3000 rounds through it before it went out of whack) and will head out this week to work the load back up but expect the same results with the charge weight. H4350 is a GREAT powder for the lighter bullets but you may find pressure issues with the 180's. I have found the 4831sc a very accurate and easy to work with powder with very little variance from lot to lot. Good luck!

Got better velocity out of RL17, but could not get it to group as well as the 4831sc.

Did you try giving those 180's a pretty good jump? .050 did the trick for me! I find all Hybrids like to be well off the lands.

Dennis

I jumped them about .020", but to be honest the 4831sc load has been so good to me with single digit ES across the chronograph and prints well on paper I have stuck with it. I may try playing with the RL17 again this fall after the nationals and worlds just for"grins". Thanks for the tip!
