30BR seating depth question

I'm new to the 30BR and have a question involving seating depth. The base to Ogive measurements on the bullets I have are .303. Seated to just engage the rifling, only about .120 of the bearing surface is in the case neck. Given the old rule of thumb that you never want to seat a bullet out further in the neck that the caliber, it appears that something is amiss.

How much of the bearing surface is in the case neck on your loads? I'm just wondering if my situation is par for the course.

What bullet are you using and it sounds like it was throated or worn leaving it almost impossible to do what you want.Have the barrel scoped.I have a 6 br that has the same problem,I hang them out till they just touch and it is still accurate.

I think I bought .925 bullets when I should have bought 1 inch. That's the only thing I could find. The are EPS bullets. The gun was bought from Jim Borden with less than 200 rounds down the barrel. I'm going to contact him too, thanks for the reply.

DMascara,,,,you didnt say what wt bullet you are using ,,but most 110-118 gr botique "B"enchrest bullets in any 30 cal. ctg. with .000-,020" FB will seat into the case ~.110-.150 when "jamed"....forget about the old wives tale of one cal of seating depth,,,,the neck is not even that long on many 30 cal ctgs.....Roger

what Rodger said ! most people use H4198 and it fills the case half up the neck anyway . JIM probably has it set up that way so you don't crush powder when seating the bullet.

If I recall I sold him a 8 ogive 118gr bullet made on a 925 jacket. DMascari, if you have a zero freebore chamber then seat them like suggested with the jam, using lots of neck tension 324-325 bushing with a .330 nk chamber, try 34.3gr of H4198 with a Fed 205 primer and that should get you 3050 fps. With the known fact of Borden rifles built with great precision that combo and load has proven to give excellent results. Feel free to call, email or PM me to discuss in any detail you would like. If you feel those 8 ogive's aren't getting it done for you or you do in fact have some free bore I will exchange you free of charge with some of my other FB bullets made on the 1.00 jacket.

Load some up and shoot them I think you find some great results, either way I will work with you anyway you need.

My 30BR with zero freebore, seated to touch had about 1/3 of the case neck length contacting the bullet. As said, the remaining 2/3 was filled with H4198. Using the 117 Fowlers, no longer available.

With a 8 ogive bullet, I'd prefer zero freebore. I think Jim's 30BR has a little more than that, but were splitting hairs here. If you've got .100-.125, go shoot it. 7 ogive bullets and h4198 make for a very full case and kinda a pain to get charges that many like in there and handle them while loading...not to mention the compression, which effectively slows the powder burn rate slightly. I don't think that's a good thing with h4198 in a 30br, as it seems to be borderline slow, anyway. It works, but shots seem to drop out the bottom if you're not tuned properly, IME. Slowing it by compressing it is going the wrong direction to help this.--Mike Ezell

My Borden 30 BR barrel does have quite a bit more FB than the Robinett standard. I
