30br hunting bullet for 17 twist

For an excercise in frustration, run Berger flatbase bullets through their jprovided twist calculator, then look up the published recommended twist rate on their own bullet. They do have a disclaimer.

There are drag form calculators available online that are much more accurate for flat base bullets as they use bullet measurements for inputs. Geoffrey Kobe has one that uses measurements instead of calibers for inputs making it more simple. Even the largely abandoned green hill formula seems to work a little better as it assumes a flat base instead of a boat tail.

The wild card is always the tip, either hollow point or polymer, screws with balance and pressure points, but a prediction of 1.3 vs .95 when you have round holes on target at 300 yards instead of side profile gives a bit more confidence in the calculator.
If I had my wits about me, I would have pulled the suppressor on my second target. Now it’s in my mind that the can could be affecting a marginally stable bullet. Any of you smart fellas have any thoughts on that? Running a Gentech Tracker.

The short 112 X-Out was the only of the 4 tested to group like you’d expect a 30BR to group. We all know a 118-10 BIB should be no problem in a 17 TW.

Anything is possible, I’m not sure Hornady has a 1/2 MOA expectation on that bullet no matter the twist.

If you’re feeling kind of spunky, cut or carefully pull some tips, if you have a way to point them, maybe try that on a couple. But that should change the length enough to rule our stability.

Checking without the suppressors won’t hurt.
