minimum twist 125 nosler bt

I'm looking to build a 30 bellm, which is a 30 dasher with a short neck. I'd rather have a 30br but the silly hunting laws in Illinois don't allow that one. Anyway what twist should I get to properly stabilize a nosler 125gr ballistic tip? From what I've read most guys are running 17-18" twists on their 30br's but I think the ballistic tip is a longer bullet.

FWIW - You may be able to go a little slower but I went over this with the guys at Bartlein to set up some barrels for use with the 300 AAC Blackout and suitable for the 125's (including the Noslers) and they recommended a 1:15" twist barrel. With the intended use, I doubt there would be any downside to using a little faster twist (like a 1:15") vs something like a 1:16" or a 1:17". Some of the 125's are not suitable for use in a 1:17" twist, especially if it gets colder.

I was kinda leaning towards a 15 twist. Which bullets aren't suitable in a 17 twist when it gets colder? Just wondering.

Thanks,

Aaron

I spoke to a shooter who said the Sierra 125 MatchKing (#2121) shot decent in a 17" twist when it was warm out but when it got cold there were problems as it seemed it was "hanging on the edge" stability wise.

The Nosler 125 BTip is 1.060 long. In my .30's, I've shot bullets on the 1.080 jacket and had no stability issues with 17 twist barrels down to 50 degrees F. That said, for a cold weather hunting rig, I'd opt at least a 15 and probably a 14 twist barrel. You'll get a safety net of sorts plus flexibility on bullet choices.

With nosler introduction their long range accubonds I might to a completely different direction. They expand down to 1300fps. How fast could a 190 or 210 be pushed in the br case?

No idea, Aaron.

It goes w/o saying that the twist requirements will be pretty herky..... -Al
