308 win for elk

That combo shooting a MOA
guys i need to do a load work up for 308 win for elk hunting 300 yards or less. i was thinking of barnes 165 ttsx and maybe 4064 or varget.

what would yall recommend?
work up, and placed in the heart/lung will kill any Elk walking, especially with in 300 yrds. Remember to show us photos of your hunt/harvest.

Just my $0.02...
The Barnes 165 TSX and TTSX will do fine inside 300 yards from a 308 Win.
If loaded to 2650 it would still be doing +2000 fps with +1500 ft*lbs at 300 yards, so it will have no problem. I will just say that 300 yards would be the limit.

The Biggest bull elk I ever saw taken in Montana was with a 308 it was a huge 7/7 bull. The shot was good, but the guy shot it again to make sure such a life time bull didn't get up. I helped him pack it out. In my 308 i only use Nosler Partition 180 or something like that say an A frame does a much better job for me than cup and core bullets. So many good powders to use take your pic what works best for you.

I've had very good results on several bull elk using both the Barnes 168 TSX and the Barnes 150 TTSX BT with H4895 powder, the best powder I've found for the .308. Longest shot was about 320 yards with the 168 TSX.

In the 70s I hunted a lot with a lifelong 70yo Montana resident for elk. He used a iron sighted Savage 99 in 300 savage with 180 gr bullets. It was a deadly combination. at less than 200 yds. Of course I realize he had lots of time and could take only close shots. The point is that a scope sighted .308 with good bullets is more than adequate. The nosler Part. has always worked well.

I would still have a Nosler Partition or two to be shot first in case you get a shot at your closer ranges.
Partitions are fantastic bullets.

I’ve seen a pile of elk shot with the triple shots and the blue bullets of the same brand. They all tune up good but do NOT deliver what the Partition delivers!

Not much tracking when anchored with a partition.

Now this is from my personal experiences, YMMV.

Maybe I’m wrong or he made a typo but the SMK is the Sierra Match King. A SGK Sierra Game King would be appropriate but to suggest the use of match bullets for big game is either irresponsible or meant to be inflammatory. I guess I took the bait.
I wouldnt assume trolling. Some elk hunters, a lot actually have moved to using certain match bullets for game as their performance has been astounding. Most better than typical "hunting bullets." I wont argue that with you as you have your opinion and your entitled to it. I just think its a little inflammatory to accuse a member of trolling for suggesting a bullet others are having good success with regardless of whats printed on the box.

Not knowing much about Berger hunting bullets, what’s the difference between Classic hunters and elite hunters?
I wondered that as well. Here is the answer.

Some big heavy bones in an Elk, I would want something with a little more power than a deer rifle, but if not at least a very tough bullet. The outfitter I hunted with killed several for his freezer every year with a 30/30, but always close where he could get the shot he needed .
