308 Win Bolt action Rifle of choice

So I have been looking at purchasing a 308 Bolt action Rifle. I want to use it to fire my own loads and at distance of 100 plus yards and towards if I wish to shoot in competition (maybe). I am on a budget kinda of so not wanting to go over the top. Looking at barrel length longer than 20 inches like in 24inches or longer.

So I have prepared a spreadsheet with my likes and these are my likes but not sure which...I own the Ruger American Standard GEN2 in 223 and enjoy shooting it.

Ruger American Predator GEN2 with the 22 inch barrel

Ruger M77 Hawkeye Long Range Target with 26 inch barrel

Remington 700 ADL with 24 inch barrel

Remington 700 SPS with 24 inch barrel

Savage 110 Tactical with 24 inch barrel

Savage 110 Predator with 24 inch barrel

I like the M77 but not ever shot one or nor no anyone that has one, so looking for input on it as well as the others. Tikka's are out of my range as well as Sako's too. I tend to lean towards the Ruger since I already have a Ruger in 223 and it shoots nicely at 100 yards plus. But also the Remington 700 with their R5 barrels are standing there in their own and are looking great.

Looking for input....

Thank you

If hunting is not on the agenda, Tikka Varmint, if they make it in 308. I think they use to, not sure. Easy enough to check. The heavy 24" barrel and Tikka out of the box quality would be my choice, bar none for a factory rifle.
Yes,
And also think about if you want upgrade (trigger, stock, etc) the rifle and what is available in the aftermarket realm that will fit your brand of rifle.
Just a thought.

Rem 700 is a no brainer. Everyone makes parts/accessories for it, it’s wonderfully accurate and robust, and can be easily upgraded if/when you want.
The Mauser-based Ruger M77 is a sentimental favorite, and is the only true controlled feed action you listed (and there’s plenty of reason to value that). It’s built like a tank. The Long Range Target model is awesome.
Go with the REM 700 or Ruger Hawkeye M77.
Good luck with your decision!

The Tikka may be out of the OP's current budget - I understand that - but chew on this for a while - often when buying something lesser one ends up spending the same and sometimes more in upgrades and in the end it's a "wash" financially. Why not start with an upgrade initially. ;)

I have the Tikka Varmint Model in 223 Rem and out of the box with no aftermarket upgrades this rifle shoot as good as my 700 's with aftermarket match grade barrels and stocks. My Tikka also shoots on par with my very expensive Weatherby Mark V Super Varmint Master which was another out of the box no grades tack driver.

If you aren’t in a hurry… buy good bits and pieces as you can and have one built, or use a pre fit.

I have several rifles that took over a year for me to accumulate all the parts for…….

You can spend less money, find you aren't satisfied, spend more money for upgrades, repeat a couple of times.

Then you're out your time, spent the same or more money, and still might not be satisfied. Let alone the cost of the components you've used.

Been there, done that.

Unless you're interested in the trip more than the destination, I'd spend the money and buy the correct platform to start with.

Sometimes a man WANTS a Chevy, not a Caddy.

I'd shop for a 700. Sooner or later you will find a used one that isn't mucked up and off ya go.

It's hard for us guys here to remember that lots of guys start out with a budget and over time sell, trade and barter into other stuff. I get you. I did the same and while, maybe, over time I spent more money, I think I got my $$ worth out of each rifle I owned and learned on, before I started buying more expensive stuff. But even then, I have only one rifle that I had built, and every other gun was bought on sale, or was used and no longer competitive. I still have a great time shooting them and while they are not the new fangled, they still put lead on target at long range and they quiet my soul when I am enjoying them.

Rem 700 Gen II 5R is the finest all-purpose (heavy on the tactical side…) model Remington ever made, IMHO. Used models pop up for sale every now and then. You do have to replace the factory trigger, but once that’s done, it’s smooth sailing. If you’re not competitive with this rig, or not taking game with it, it’s not the rifle that’s holding you back….

The gen ii is the 20” threaded model correct?
