.308' Accuracy

I have recently had a rifle built, it is a Kreiger barrel with a tight necked chamber and is on a blueprinted and bedded Remy 700 action. I have acheived the velocities I want,2966 f.p.s with a 155 SMK) but at 300m the groups are around the 1/2 minute mark. I've been working back from the lands 10 thou at a time to get the accuracy I want, does anyone out there have experience with jamming a .308 into the lands?

With the barnes 168g XLC, I get that kind of velocity and the round is .030" out of the lands and the groups print a 1/4" at 200 yds. Using 168g Nosler J4's that are moly coated and right on the lands, I am getting right at 2850fps and they have produced some very accurate loads, but never better than the barnes so far. I believe I am going to back the load off some and see if it doesn't tighten up the group a little better. I like the velocity I am getting, but I think it may be a little too tight for the bullet. Just have to do a little more shooting with them to be able to say for sure. I started off right against the lands and then went in to about .010" and had to back it out due to pressure signs on the case.

My Kreiger barrel,30" with 1:13 twist and .3065 x .298 bore) likes the 155 SMK's touching the lands. It also likes Varget in Lapua cases with Fed 210M primers. My current load is 46.5 grs. but this is hot and needs to be worked up to. I'm getting 3000 fps and accuracy is in the 1" range at 300 yards for 5 shot groups.

This is not a bench gun, but a Palma rifle built on a Savage action by Larry Racine in New Hampshire.

No coincidence, my Win 70 has a 30" tight-bore Krieger "Palma" barrel, 1:13 twist. I too use Lapua brass, 155 grain Noslers, Federal 210M primers and 46.5 grains of Varget. Pretty standard load for Palma rifles. Also pretty doggone accurate! Not unusual to get 1/2 MOA accuracy out of it.

Also have a 24" Krieger on a Rem 700 with a standard .30 bore and a 1:12 twist. That barrel is turned to the Rem varmint contour. I generally load it with 168 grain Noslers, 45.0 grains of Varget and all the other components are the same. Again, 1/2 MOA to 3/4 MOA is not unusual. This morning it put 10 shots into 2" at 300 yards, from a bipod.

Regards, Guy

Two different factory 26" barrels... 46.5gr Varget behind a 155gr Nosler in a Lapua case, 47.5gr in a Winchester case. Good for 2890 and 2940fps respectively out of the second barrel,Savage, treated w/ Tubb FF).

Broughton 5C 30" standard Palma taper, chambered by Jim Cloward w/,I believe) a WTC95 Palma reamer... 45gr in a Winchester Palma case, early 90's limited production, similar to Lapua but very slightly lighter) gives mid 2900's.

Just an update on how I'm getting on with my .308". I've settled on a load of 45 grains of Vit N140 at about 30 thou off the lands and I'm getting groups of around 1/3 to 1/4 MOA.

Yeah it's good to finally get there George! Good thing it's not a 6.5x.284, I'd have used half the barrel life trying to get a load that worked! Best group so far has been 3 rounds on a one inch target paster at 300m, hopefully the club will be shooting at 600 yards soon on a nice still day so I can see what it can really do.

I'm a bit late on this thread. I have found that putting the 175 SMKs into the lands works best for my rifle. Krieger MTU contour, 1:11 twist and 95 Palma chamber on a Surgeon action. Load is 43.2 gr Varget, Fed or Lapua brass, 175 into the lands about .010 and 210M primers. Same load didn't want to do anything off of the lands from .005-.020 so I put them into and magic happened! Good luck to ya.
