300 yard benchrest gun,... what would you shoot?

How many targets in a match.
Five targets. At the tackdriver, you shoot the 200 yard score target placed at 300 meters.
Go here and scan down thru the posts to find the results.

tack driver is a UNIQUE MATCH. LIBERAL RULES, 5 SCORE AND 5 GROUP TARGETS AT 300 METERS OVER THE WEEKEND. 22LB WEIGHT LIMIT...a fun bragging match
I would not say the rules are”liberal”.

7 minute Matches with no warmup.
no spotting scopes.
no coaching.
you have to shoot the same rifle all the way through. If force to change Rifles because of mechandicap failure, the replacement must be the same caliber.

Aside from the coaching, that is more strict than most Registered Benchrest Matches.

That is what makes it Unique. Simply put, you better bring your A Game.

I found out long ago that the glass is VERY important, maybe more-so than the rifle itself. When I first started shooting long range I was trying to buy the most powerful/clearest scope I could afford. I found and bought a Hawke Sidewinder 15-60x56 that had ED glass and interchangable turrets, at the time it was the most "affordable" scope with ED glass in that power range. It was a real advantage for tuning loads to be able to see bullet holes at 300 yards. I have since gave up shooting long range because there is just simply no place close to shoot those distances, 300 yards is it without driving 4 or more hours and hoping it's not packed when you get there.
I still own that scope and use it but now my glass of choice is the Nightforce competition.

You are correct. 2 out of the top 3 shooting 6PPC. I think the 6 is the answer regardless of which one.Its the shooter not the cartridge, If Bart had picked the PPC it would have been 3 0ut of 3.
If those 3 shooters were shooting the same of any cartridge it would have been the same (6br, 6.5 x 47, 6 x 47, 6BRA, 6XC), it dont matter. They are that good! At 300 my 12tw BR with 80 Dom normally outshoots my PPC. We have local f class shooters that can take 284 win and kick the crap out of all of us at 200.
If you all have good equip......shooter is the deal!

Says something about the abilities of the 2 groups of shooters if the 284 group beats the PPC group routinely at 200 yds.

I'm thinking 15 to 25 mph winds and gusts at least 40 mph.
Shocked me when I seen some of he best shooters in Pa. have
shots go missing......Even though I shot my SA284 cat at that
match, My 284-ELF is going to make a good 300 yarder.
Bullets will be a factor though, Been thinking hard about that.

Fuj
What kind of Agg would you say your 284 is capable of at 600 yards? Curious to see what you feel it’s capable of.

Bart

Bart, Think about a 7br with a good custom 118 gr bullet. Size advantage over a 6 and a good b.c. advantage over a 30.......it's that bullet thing that's missing. Plus when using it to 500 yds a big advantage over a 6 in seeing holes.

Just pondering,
if the 6mm's rule at the short range game, AND the 6 mm's rule at the 600 yard game (BR), I would think a 6 mm would be the ticket at 300, but I've been wrong before.
Again, just pondering, if I were to "grow a pair" and decide to make the long trip to NC to shoot the Tack Driver match, I would start with a Dasher, BRA, or straight BR with 80-108 grain bullets. This is where we have a nice selection of high quality bullets.
I have tried a 7mm, and I love my 300WSM and shoot it well. My 6 will out agg it most days, not always, but most.
I have even talked to several die makers about a good 7mm long range bullet die. However, I have not found a good source for jackets for what I was wanting to make.

A quick review of the NBRSA and IBS records indicate the vast majority of records in short range benchrest and 600 yard benchrest are owned by the 6mm.

Then again,
I shoot a Waldog at one and two hundred because I shoot it better than my PPC, at three hundred, I would spool up the dasher.
But, that is just me.

I like your thinking Jeff! A ways back I posted up on Big Stuff forum, "Experiment I never saw comimg" and it confirmed for me.....at least in the wind.....the heavies have their place. Even in relatively calm conditions but gusting, there can be a difference. However, I'm not the shooter most of you guys are.
