300 WSM ??s

Looking at building a 300 WSM hunting rifle to shoot heavy bullets at game and steel. The 300 WIn Mag has more umph but the 300 WSM is known for accuracy and that's what I chase, even in hunting/steel guns. 215 Berger Hybrids will be my Bullet of choice. Rifle will go on a long action or a medium length action.

With the boat tail junction seated at the should/neck junction, what is the COAL? Looking at the Berger spec sheet and the Sammi drawing, it looks like it would be around 3.150"?

What reamer freebore will put the Bullet there?

What loads and fps is everyone using for 215s seated out long like this? Seems like h1000 and h4831sc should be the ticket?

What could be expected out of a 24" barrel?

Any special WSM reamers out there that lead to better accuracy, ie: neck dia and such?

Ordering a barrel and plan on getting a 9 twist for the 210 vld, 215 hybrid and 225 eld-m. I plan to shoot the 215 mostly, though. 9 twist or 10 twist barrel? I'll be ordering it so no issue on availability.

Thanks for any and all info.

I use a .338 but i need to turn necks. I don't think for your purpose I would turn necks. Not sure what a no turn measures. You can ask the reamer maker. I run a .210 freebore and it sits the 210 VLD right at the junction.

You won't need a 9 twist for those bullets. I shoot alot of 210 VLD bullets with a 10 and an 11. I would get a 10 because of the 215. I use H4350 because it shoots good. If you want a little more speed H4831or H4831SC should work great. I feel H1000 is too slow. I run the 210 VLD around 2800 to 2850 depending on barrel.

I am not sure what velocity you get with a 24 inch becuase I shoot all heavy 30 inch for 1000 yards. It is a great cartridge and usually very easy to get to shoot. Matt

It will be my do-it-all rifle. Elk, deer, possibly bear. Of course Bullet choice can change for the task at hand.

215s kill well.

My no turn 300 wsm is .343 neck. I have only had it in my hands a couple weeks and I’m hoping it is my do all gun as well, 600 and closer was the plan. Hope this helps.

Matt, what disadvantage would I be at with a 9 twist over the 10 for the 215. Do you feel the 10 is more accurate and won't show pressure signs as quickly?

I'll be ordering it, so it's not a big deal to go either way on twist.

Matt has some really good information on the 300 wsm. I built a 300 wsm hunting rifle and my reamer is a .342 neck with .255 free bore. I shoot the 210 hunt vld. I use 62 grains of H4350 with Federal 210M primers. My krieger barrel is a 10 twist and is 25 inches long and the speed it shoots at is 2700 fps. I had very good accuracy from 2650 to 2700. My coal is 3.105.

I just feel the 9 is not needed. 210 will fly with 11mm twist and has set records in 1000 yard BR. I also know records was set with a 10 and 215. My coal would be about .040 shorter, but a little extra length wouldn't hurt it. Matt

Good information guys, I appreciate it.

Does h4350 or h4831sc make more speed with the 210s and 215s?

Looks like rl17 and imr 7828ssc is a good velocity powder as well.

Anyone tried H1000?

300WM and 300WSM are both good rounds. I would like to see someone prove their is an accuracy difference between the two, the 300WM held its share of records until fads moved on.

Both need to be shot from long actions to get the most from heavy bullets and this kind of negates much of the WSM advantage, which is why I never got around to prioritizing one...would love one in a short action as a moderate range game rifle shooting medium weight bullets.

The 300WM has never shot great in 1000 yard BR. It won occasionally. Actually the 300 Weatherby and its derivative have done much better. Once the 300 WSM came on the scene (around 2007) it has dominated the 30 cal clamberings. It is just that much easier to get to shoot and stays there. Brass is better and the capacity is right.

Once the 300 WSM came on the scene (around 2007) it has won a lot of aggregates and broke a lot of records. It has made almost every other 30 caliber chambering disappear. It is just that much easier to get to shoot and it stays there from week to week.

I am talking the last 20 years of competition and i have shot them all. The brass is way better, the capacity is right and it is not finicky. We had up to 200 guns every match, 10 matches a year, with both classes and that gives a lot of guns to compare. Matt

I have 5 of 300 wsm, 2 are Remington 40x actions, 2 Bat actions and 1 Remington action. All are shooters, all are krieger barrels in 10 twist, all shoot 210 VLD's, all will shoot from 61.5 -63.5 grains of H4350 and all are very competative. The last guy I remember shooting a 300 WM was Frank Grappone, it shot well but never a record holder.

In 2008 I was at the very top of the SOY points list going into the Nationals in Ohio. Out of nowhere comes Danny Brooks! Well, not exactly out of nowhere , as he was a nationally-known shooter in 1000 BR for many years, but he hadn't made much of a showing that year, and his SOY points showed it. Then came the Nationals, and Danny and his 300 Winchester Mags absolutely annihilated everybody. He won pretty much all of the trophies at the Nationals, plus ended up shooter of the year. I'm 99% sure that he was shooting 300 Win Mags. But you all are correct, I haven't seen many shooters shoot it since. If I get back into shooting I'm pretty sure the 300 WSM will play a big part in my LG's along with the Dasher or BR AI. I will shoot 300 WSM and will continue to dabble in the 300 weatherby's in my heavy gun, as I have had great success with it.

Danny shot a 300 WSM.. I cleaned right beside him. I finished second to him. Our canopy actually was attached to his. Not everybody updates their equipment list or they change guns at the last minute. Matt

Thanks for the update....don't know why I thought it was a Win mag. My opinion....he could have been shooting a 30-30 AI and the result would have been the same!! He really mopped up!!

Thanks again,
Tod

If you remember, it was very windy at times. I was on the line shooting sighters and turned around to talk to my spotter. I saw The Sierra bullets canopy sail about 50 feet over top of Kelbys motorhome and end up about 200 yards down in the field. Their canopy was next to ours, in the back corner, on this side of Kelbys. One bad target would take you out of it. Matt

I have hunting rifle built on a Borden Alpine action and shoot Berger 210 hunting vld's. Rifle has a 24" #3 contour barrel that I believe is 10 twist. Pretty much everything I have ran through it shot extremely well but wanted to try the heavier bullets for elk hunting. I'm using 67gr of Reloader 26, CCI 250, and Nosler brass. Overall length is 2.935 which gives it a .065 jump to the lands. Velocity is right at 2850 fps. Attached is a typical 3 shot group fired at 100 yards without waiting for the barrel to cool between shots. It pretty much holds true out to the 800 yard distances I have shot it.
