300 wsm lr rig powder recommendations

Both of these powders ^^^^^ are excellent, excellent powders. I found in the 6mmBR with 108s that N150 was the MOST accurate powder I used. I also used it successfully in the 6.5 x 47 Lapua with Berger 130 VLDs..

My experience too with N150 in these two cartridges, but with 123s in 6.5X47L when I used that one. In the UK, N150 is also heavily used in F/TR and 'Match Rifle' with heavy bullets (185gn and above) and Lapua Palma small primer brass. Loads are heavy too in this instance and results are better than QuickLOAD might lead you to believe possible.

LATEST INFORMATION: This past Saturday (1-19-20) I shot a 500 yard match with my .300 WSM that has the 215 barrel on it. I have, for the past few weeks, tried and used the 230 Hybrids. It shot pretty well for a barrel that has 1400 rounds on it. So I took it to the 500 yard match Saturday and WON! However, that is a misnomer! I fought tooth and nail to keep it in the 10 ring and only had 28-Xs!! I knew it was close to the end. Today, 1-27, I loaded up some rounds to fireform some 270WSM that were necked up to .300 WSM. The groups started out "ok".. But by the time I was finished, 30 rounds later>>> they were 4-5 inches at 330 yards! The barrel is T-total toast. So for those of Y'all that have been asking>>>it got 1500 rounds before it went into the toilet. That is about all you can expect out of a magnum, especially going thru the the Arizona summers here! I am pleasantly pleased!

Now for EXPERIMENT TIME: A month ago I ordered a barrel from Bartlein specifically for the 230 Hybrids. It is a 32" 4 groove conventional style with their GAIN TWIST rifling. It is 9.75 down to 9.30. I am hoping it cuts down a bit on the torque, as those 230s do torque. However, it will have to be used at a later date. The barrel won't be here for another 3 months. Well I had a 9.5 like the one that just burned out and am having it done up now for the 230s. I can't have a rifle sitting for 3 months doing nothing. So the experiment will happen>>>>just down the road a little..

Too bad most good powders are not available anywhere

Not True, It takes patience, planning, & diligence to get some powders, but they are available.
H-4350 & H-4831 are available intermittently, Alliant Reloder 23 is available intermittently, and a good amount of the V/V powders are available. - Sign-Up for Notifications from several web-sites & be willing to take action & quickly is what its going to take.
I was told that there wasn't any Reloder 26 or V/V N-570 to be had. - With a focused plan & some effort I not only found both but have both in my supplies.

Regards & Good Luck - Ron -

IMR-4451, I’m not suggesting it’s a replacement for any of the powders mentioned above but will get you going. Bought it when I couldn’t get enough H-4350. Didn’t plan ahead far enough. Stuck with the 4451 and got it down to 3 in vertical at 1000.

Any Vihtavouri powders that work well with the .300 short monster? @Laurie what do your guys favor on your side of the pond in this chambering?

Although I haven't ventured down the 300 WSM road I do know the favoured powder in the Uk is H4831sc, followed by N165, N160 and RS70. Of course personal supplies of 4831sc will eventually dry up unless the rumour of a reformulated formula is true. The sooner we can get RL23 the better.

I believe it's now here Ian. Simon Fox is getting me some. It certainly looks the number one option for an H4831 replacement. (I got the Sierra Reloading Manual Edition VI over Christmas which lists it and IMR-4955 in various cartridges alongside the two 4831s. 4955 maxes out a 50 or 100 fps step down on H4831 and Re23 nearly across the board which is a tad disappointing.)

H4831sc, followed by N165, N160 and RS70.

@milanuk Monte, FYI RS70 is a Nitrochemie 'Reload Swiss' high-energy 'EI' grade like Re17 but shown with an equivalent burning rate to Re22/MRP and N165. As far as I can see, there is no US equivalent as yet. (Our Reload Swiss importer was making noises a couple of years ago about a single-based equivalent to the 4831s - there is for the 4350s here - but nothing has come of it to date.)

A few of us tested it Laurie, in .284, 7 SAUM, Shehane, 7 and 300 WSM, it was awesome. It burnt as cool as N165 but gave a fill ratio and speed equal to H4831sc. We told them them to make it, but they never did, go figure!!

“We don't actually have many 300WSM users in F-Class - the 7mm/300 variant is the norm at national level with some use in club shooting too. That may change in future years as the 300 version's best known Brit user is Gary Costello (@GLC) who has just taken our GB F-Class league championship after an outstanding season's shooting with 79 out of a possible 80 points (best four results of the eight championship rounds). However, Gary uses sevens too and won't have won all his points with the 300.

As to Re23 which has been mentioned in other posts, I don't know if we have it here yet. I've ordered some as a possible 4831 replacement but have yet to see any turn up. We've recently started seeing Re16 which was introduced around the same time, (maybe a little earlier ?).[/QUOTE]

Hi Laurie

I use a .300wsm exclusively to win the 4 matches, barrel died at the November shoot with 1650 superbly accurate rounds, shot with H4350 and H4831sc later in its life.

I am pleased to say the new barrel is just as good if not better.

Thanks for the clarification Gary. Not a bad barrel life that - 50 to 60% more than the 7WSM?

+1 for H4350. It doesn’t have the highest fps but it has worked great for me and seems to be very consistent running the 215s outa a 9”t 4g Krieger

I started in March last year with the 215s. It went thru Spring, Summer, Fall and now winter. It went from the 40s thru to the 100+.. 90+ percent of the rounds down the barrel were in F-Class with 20 shots plus sighters.

what bullet ?
I use H 4350 with all of my 300 WSM tubes.....and don't plan on changing any time soon!! I am not worried about every last FPS....The extra 100 FPS at the muzzle equates to what.....50- 60 FPS on target at LR. I have yet to see a target, compeditor, or spectator be impressed by 50 FPS. But they are with 3 - 5 inch groups at 1K. ;)

Sounds like significantly better barrel life than a SAUM.
Mostly we shoot 10shot strings (2 convertible sighters) and the occasional 15 shot string.
I should get good service from mine

Mine is at 1100rounds and looks a lot better than a 900round old 284 through the borescope.

I have a Kreiger 10tw at the smiths to be chambered. This one will be 32” finished and with a tuner.
Hoping to have it running for our 1000-1200yard shoot in a few months time

Oh yeah.. The SAUM is a considerably more overbore cartridge than the .300WSM. Many people run the SAUM with 184s with both H4350 and H4831sc, and it is doubtful you would get more than 1000-1200(tops) excellent accuracy from the SAUM. Many SAUMs don't get that many..
