300 wsm 185 Juggernaut

I wanted to start a thread specific to the 300 wsm and 185’s. This is a hunting rifle @Alex Wheeler built for me. I’ll list the specs shortly. But we have seen great success with this combo in multiple platforms with multiple powders. We all started off using RL16, in the off season I wanted to try a more attainable powder H4831SC. The node I found with this rifle was 2970-2990. I then tried seating depth. The typical 10-20 off didn’t look great so I started .010 in the lands from touch. .005-.007 shot small along with .045-.050. So I wanted to try these at 600 yesterday. Started at .005 in the lands. Shot the first group, then another to verify it repeated. This is the 4th time on 2 separate days the rifle has shot very good at 600.

Here is a picture of the 65.5 of RL16. Might be a little warm to run in a heavy gun. Lower node is 2930 at 64-64.5. This is from a 24” barrel. I would start at .008 in and work back. The H4831sc load has less pressure.

I found a good node with R16 around 63.7gr 0.015 jump, CBTO 2.302, OAL 3.036, 180 Berger EH , ADG, GM215, from a 20" Tikka. Long action mag.

Battery in my chrono was dead when I shot the ladder, I anticipate velocity will be~2875-2900. I was previously shooting 64.1gr with Winchester brass at 2920 from the same barrel. I hit pressure at 64.4 gr in the ADG brass. Win blue bag brass definitely has more capacity. Didn't see pressure in the win brass until ~66gr.

Not always the case, when applying an adequate amount of bullet hold I can seat into the lands without issues.
I sincerely hope that works out. Personally, I would never intentionally introduce a point of failure on a hunting rifle. Many times you are waiting years for a tag and spending many many thousands of dollars for that trophy you have been waiting for. Why chance it? You certainly don't need a 1/4 minute gun to hunt with. I'll take a 1/2-3/4 minute gun any day that has 100% reliability. It's not like we're talking about a bench gun, there will be so many variables in the field that it will make that extra tiny bit of accuracy a moot point.

Strong shooting, what rate of twist is the barrel?

At least with rl 16 they have a nice jump node. .011-.017 agged 1.2". This is 600yds. I would not worry about pulling bullets with a light jam. I had a 280ai that i jammed .020. Killed 4 elk with it never had an issue. You just have to understand your equipment.20220625_074027.jpg

I am jamming bullets on a hunting gun. .005 in the lands isn’t even noticeable. You can push more than that by your index finger using a Hornady coal tool. Then you drop the rifle on the but of the stock and the bullet falls out. You can’t grab a bullet and pull it out by hand. It takes quite a bit. I shot a 210 VLD in a wsm jammed .013 and tried everything I could to stick that bullet and it never would. Cycled the bolt numerous times. This is from touch. Not hard jam. I will try the .045 off jump and if it repeats and shoots good I would switch to that.

Looks great. What is your Freebore lenght in this 300wsm? I wonder if m .225fb is too long for the 185s. Thanks

Idk what mine is but seems throated for the 210’s. I have shot the 185’s before with just some quick medium book loads and it shot good. I never worked a ton with them to improve but they were mag length and probably jumping over or near .200. The 180 elites i was jumping .209 off and they were great!
