300 rum into a 416 Remington?

I am curious what people think about this. For no other reason then want , I have been thinking about a 416 Remington. I started searching around and found a used FN Mauser. With an incredible piece of wood barreled with a flat sided barrel in 300 Remington ultra mag. They want 1400. For the rifle. Do you think it’s possible to rebarell to 416 Remington ? What other issues might I run into?

Its impossible to tell . It all depends on the previous work done . The mauser is being pushed to its limits ( in my opinion ) and would need to know how much was cut from the bolt lugs and receiver rails . One would sacrifice strength the other feeding .
And of course what FN action .

I don’t think strength would be too much of an issue if the action will handle the 300 Ultra Mag. That is already a very intense cartridge.

416’s Remington has quite a bit more felt recoil. I helped a shooter sight one in a few years ago loaded with the 350 grn Barnes TSX, we used cross sticks standing.

the rim on the 416 is pretty much the same, if the Mauser claw extractor will catch it, there should not be a problema proble75FCD4B6-356E-4213-BE79-77A070C19DB7.png7231E0DB-F27C-4518-8C20-5F85E6D766BC.gif

No way I would pay $1400 for any Mauser, especially if I had plans to spend even more money on rebarrelling it. There are a lot of affordable custom actions and good stocks that can be bought for around the same price and you’ll be light years ahead of any Mauser as far as quality and strength is concerned

The stock alone may be worth the $1400. But I understand, on this board "classic sporters" get little notice over custom actions and synthetic stocks. He should post a pic or link so we can see what he's 'eye ballin'.

Here are a couple pics of the original rifle. $1400 is why I am asking the question. Under 1,000 I would have already bought it. I have custom rifles in stainless and synthetic stocks and they shoot lights out. But I also like the mausers in a fine piece of wood.

The only thing I'd be concerned about would be will it feed the .416? The Mauser feeds off the rails. If the rails have been 'opened' to feed the .300UM, will it still feed the .416? Many, many '98s, both commercial models and military models, have been altered for the H&H cartridges over the years. And it all depends on how the alteration were made. I still build case hardened Mausers in wood, but I pretty much stick to standard cartridges (.30/06 , .308 , X 57 , 9.3 x 62 and std. length mags) and I have them re-carburized before I use 'um. Zastava offered their commercial Mauser in .375 H&H, but I think those Zastava actions were forged of alloy steel and 'through hardened' (not certain of that, though). Nice stock on that .300UM, though. A case hardened Mauser wouldn't be my first choice for a long magnum. Lots of metal to remove to 'get there'. $1400 is a low price for what is seen in those pics. Couldn't build one from 'scratch' for that.........

I was kind of thinking 404 Jeffrey but I have dies, bras and bullets for the 416 Rigby and loaded ammo for 416 Remington. Ammo for those big bores can run you more then the dang gun!!

FN would have a specific logo on bolt handle and made in Belgium .
The bolt stop looks Spanish but the contour on the rear tang looks CZ .
Hard to tell from the pictures . The only one very questionable is the spanish and of course how much was remove from the locking lugs , specifically the lower .
