300 PRC/Staball HD

Searched the forum and didn't find a ton of data. Looking to see what people are finding for loads with utilizing staball HD and 190 and 210 grain bullets? Obviously i will be working up on loads and wont mimic others loads without the workup. Just seeing what everyone is seeing. Thanks for any info being able to provide and happy shooting.

Responses may surpise me but it seems like that is a less than optimal powder choice for what you are doing. The burn rate is high and the load density is low with StaBall in your combination, at least according to Quickload. I use H1000 and the results are good enough I havent looked further. It can be tough to find but it is also tough to beat. HTH.

While I don't have data for the 300 PRC I disagree with the above post. The load density will most likely be at or over 100% with 210 or larger bullets. I'm guessing you are speaking about Staball. The OP is talking about Staball HD. If it were me I would start a little under Hodgdon max and work up. In the 6.5 Hodgdon data is right on and with the 7 PRC the Hodgdon data is a couple grains on the low side. You will most likely not find a lot of data because not many people have been able to get the powder and use it.

I will be interested in your results. I shoot a 300PRC with 215s. I've tried 4 different powders over 2 barrels with varying results. One thing I did find was low density loads were hard to ignite. Reloder 26 was the worst offender for me. Others have had better luck with it. For mine, H1000, works great, Retumbo works. The N series Vhit powders were a bit to hot for my liking, but produced promising results.
Good luck, keep us posted.

The other thing of note is a SAAMI spec Reamer has a very long freebore. I ordered a JGS with the freebore for the 215/220 Bergers. With the Hornady 225 ELDs the SAAMI freebore is about perfect.

Load data for Staball powder is on the Hodgdon website. Data for starting load and 215g. bullet is 75g and max is listed at 82g which produces approximately 2900fps. I'd like to see what this powder does in competition.

Well, looks like i will be the tester of this combination. I will keep everyone posted on what i come up with and find. Looks like there isn't much out there besides book data.

Just as an FYI, Hodgdon's online reloading data center has a number of bullet weights (including the two you ask about) with this powder listed for the 300 PRC.

Just figured I would update everyone on my findings. Staball HD is a powder that showed some very distinct nodes and low ES and SD. I ended up with a load of 81.5 grains with a 210 ABLR at 3.660 OACL. 2810 fps out of a 22” barrel. Groups averaged about 0.22” 3 shot group. 82.0 grains started to show some good ejector marks. Never did get a stiff bolt lift, however I just kept going until I started to see some pressure. IMG_4492.jpeg
