300 PRC hype????

Just a thought for improvement which seems to be the clarion call for many. Glad it works well for your guys.

I built one just to see. I do love that Hornady is pushing the envelope for what is "standard" as far as magazine boxes goes. It will most likely be my last because it will not run with my 30 Noslers. I don't shoot factory ammo so I could not care less about it.

I’m curious to see what I can get out of a 230 Berger hybrid tactical from a 30” barrel. Also to see how it performs on game.

I liked that I could seat these heavy bullets above the NSJ to take advantage of all the powder capacity and still use the 5 and 10 shot AI magazines.

This is how i view it. Gives a repeater action a chance and still deliver the ballistics for long range, that you’d need the 300 RUM to do prior to the prc and nosler casings. The RUM would need 3.9-4” oal.

For 1000 yrds i dont see the prc offering anything over the 300 wsm except more energy if you are longer range hunting. Beyond that range more hp is needed over the wsm i suppose. I kinda want a prc improved or 30 nosler but already have the wsm which i love

Between Frank Green, Dave Tooley and some advertising from Hornady I was persuaded to build a 300 PRC....actually Ive built 2, first one had a Hells Canyon CF Barrel which is cool but not really what I wanted but my gunsmith says you have the barrel and a donor rifle lets build one, so I ordered a reamer....!

well it turned out awesome and was extremely accurate with any bullet I put through it, my nephew bought it from me so I built another almost identical aside from the barrel, I went with a 26" #4 fluted Benchmark 1-9.5 twist

So far its been a dream to shoot, after sighting it in with the factory 225gr ELD-M I tried some handloads with 76grs of R26 and everything shot from 1/2" to 3/4"

I shot it at 500, 650,720 and 820 yards with my gunsmith spotting for me, I shot a 3" group at 820 yards, I have never shot that far in my life and my gunsmith lifts his head out of the spotting scope and says.....WOW I need one of those !
And Im certainly no F-Class shooter......I shoot recreationally more than most but thats where it ends, so I can't say if its better than any other 30 cal magnum but it certainly impresses me.

Kimber Montana 8400 300 PRC (300wm) donor, 26" #4 Fluted Benchmark 1-9.5 twist, Zeiss V6 5-30x50

Is all the hype legit? I have a good friend who works with Hornady and he says it will become the best 1000 yard caliber. He says in tests done by the military it is outperforming everything, but he does get most of his info from Hornady. Just curious what everyone thinks
Not true BUT still a fine choice for LR anything.

The same military that dumped the 45acp for the mighty 9mm?
The same military that mothballed the Wart Hog?
The same military that reasoned a 5.56 x 45 would be effective against concrete like mud?
The same military that chose a 6.8mm projectile?
The same military that has dumped a trillion in the F35/JSF that is only marginally better in two of a long list of aircraft capabilities than the F22. o_O
It only took 5 minutes of Goog to check that out.
You get the picture.

Re op, all of a sudden it is better than the 7mm ballistically? Imagonna need to see some hard data on that one - and not from the Purveyor. If it is, Wunnerful. I'll wait and pleze pass the popcorn. :D

I agree with you.... the military is littered with far more worse decisions than good ones. However we all know that there are deep political and financial reasons(someone has to get rich) along with some dick measuring going on when those contracts are made.
Is the PRC that much better than the old 300 WM? I believe it is a better designed round. It takes less powder than an ultra mag, and NM to get similar velocities but my friends PRC doesn't even shoot 200 fps faster than my WinMag so I don't really understand what the big deal is. I know there are A LOT of velocity whores out there but I don't see it as that significant or I would have had one built and maybe someday I will but when you really look at the data it's not worth it, not yet. Staying supersonic about 200 more meters when 99.7% of my shots are inside a mile is not a big deal to ME. A few guys may need the extra speed but most just jump on what ever is hot at the moment.
There are A LOT of high BC bullets out there especially 7mm, 30 cal, 338.....etc Many of those bullets may be obsolete in in 5 years. That is crazy to think about.... I never thought I'd be shooting a bullet out of my 300 that had a similar BC of a Cheytac. JMO

I got to hear a 30min discussion on the superiority of the creedmoor today at the thanksgiving table from some guys that havent shot 20 rds between them in 25yrs. Same guy that keeps his 30-06 zeroed at 1000yds so anywhere from 25yds to 1000 it hits dead on. No time to figure bullet drop like those guys on tv.
Everyone knows that only happens if it is one of the Remington semis (models 742 and 7400) with the see through scope rings for those real close shots. We all know that scopes don't work for real close shots because all you see is hair, that is why YOU HAVE TO HAVE the see through rings so you can use the iron sights. I have a 742 in 30-06 outfitted that way in my basement, it was my dad's and I have not gotten around to selling it yet.
Edit: I should have added that the 10 round magazine also helps the Remington Semi-Auto rigs reach their amazing potential.

I’ve become more and more interested. Had been 100% on the next build being a simple old win mag but with ADG brass coming and Wilson dies coming it does seem like an easy button.
