30 br short bbl expectations?

Hey Feller, I love the BR and it's varients, had one before it was officially named, we called them 308x1&1/2. We were shooting steel silhouettes out to 300 with single shot handguns. Then as the 6BR got started I got into them big time, in talking to Bill Shehane who was a world class benchrest shooter and stockmaker and building me a stock at the time, about building me another for straight group benchrest in the LG class as I wanted to try the 6BR. He laughed and leaned back in his chair and said "boy, let me save you some money and time! There is nobody living or dead that wanted to prove that a 6BR could out agg a PPC any more than me. I have tried and tried and it just won't do it. In heavy gun class at 200 and the wind blowing you can win but the light gun just has too much recoil". That was about 15 or 20yrs ago and I still believe it.... John
Oh, and I still love my BRs, BRAs, and 30BRs and my PPCs

SO, im just going to ask this straight up,
Could a 30br 17 twist with 20 inch bbl be capable of shooting zero's?
Absolutely, but the main idea with the 30BR was using it in score shooting as the 30 cal. bullet would cut the paper closer to the dot than the 6mm. The article here on the sight goes into great details with Ronnie Long, Smokin Joe, Al Nyhus, Randy Robinett on the subject.

Here's what has me concerned. I have a 30br, with a 25 inch barrel. I may go to a or I have an option to go to a new 30br, but it may only be 20 inch long barrel. Im sure ther may be a velocity loss. 5 inches gone! Think that might be short? Or say he'll with it and get tha darn thing finished and start pullin trigger? I know every build there's always that chance.

Talk me into it, or talk me out of it!

I just happened to Chronograph one of my 22 inch 30BR barrels last Saturday, (Garmin), and 36.0 grns of N130 gave an average 3070 fps with my 112.
With 115 Berger @ same load I am seeing 3062fps on a 22” barrel. I’m sure you will agree this is a very accurate & consistent load and I don’t see where a 20” barrel will restrict the op at all with proper tuning…

This is good to hear. I normally shoot a full case of Vv130 in my 25 inch bbl. Iv only chronographed it once. 35grains+
There is the other powders to consider.
The faster one's. 4198 and Vv120.
Iv shot Lt 30 and 32. Both shot great aswell.

Speeds with VV-N120 look really good as I am recently looking at it hard for the first time. Still want to test out to 300 yds. with both Clines 108 gr. and Barts 112 gr. May even check out Barts 118 gr. with it as well.

Anyone shooting longer then a 24" barrel, match or experimentation wise ??
I have not experimented with it but when I asked the question concerning longer barrel for the 30BR the answer was there was not enough gain if any due to powder being already burned before the bullet got out that far.
