30 br powder ?

My alternate 30BR powders are LT-30, VV-N130, AA-2015, H-Benchmark and VV-N133 & LT-32 for heavier 125 gr. class bullets have worked well in both my Hunter and BR rifles. BUT, my all-time record group with my BR rifle is .010 with 118 gr. BIBS FB HP and 34.2 gr. H-4198 - BR-4 primer jammed .012

The first Powder which shot GREAT via my original Ronnie Long chambered, Morrison barreled (1:18" twist) 30BR was H-4227: 29.5 Gr. of it produced 2950 FPS and reliable precision. The first summer here, there were no VfS tournaments, so, I shot it in HV group events, never having a 100 Yd. agg exceed .26xx.
For that LOT of H-4227, and the Morrison BBL, velocity window was between 2950 and 2970 FPS.

There was/is MUCHO space for more powder, however, precision went away above 30.0 Gr. Several people tried the H-4227 (an ADI powder, discontinued in USA, so one will need to use IMR 4227), but couldn't keep their fingers off the "more powder knob" . . . then would call to inform me how wrong I was, and that the stuff was a case wrecker . . . I had warned 'em . . . Never mind, that until they began tipping the can, and exceeded 30.0 GR. their tune was competitive.;) Above 30.0 Gr., that LOT, via my barrel, would go from competitive, to ho-hummer - low threes - until excessive pressure began wrecking the fun . . . just short of 3200 FPS.o_O

For me, the H-4227 worked GREAT . . . until I went to H-4198(Extreme) (another ADI number) and/or N-130, the latter of which, via the LOT I had ( a mid 90's LOT), proved less reliable/repeatable, producing the ODD AGG wrecking 200Yd. drop-out . . . For all of my 30BR chambered barrels and H-4198 (Extreme), the tune window has always been in the 3020-3060 FPS range.

All of that said, just about any powder suitable for cartridges ranging from .222 Rem, through .22BR may prove useful. In addition to the H-4227, H-322 (Extreme); BenchMark; N-120; N-130; RL-7; and others have delivered excellent reliable precision . . . but none have proven better than the H-4198(Extreme).

Over the last several years, I have ammassed a collection of stuff I have been intending to test, but just never find the time: some of the "new" powders may well make up for burn speed via more weight - substantially more weight (bulk-density), and just might prove useful - some imagination required . . . Burn rate charts DO NOT factor for EXPANSION RATIO!;)

The Lt-30 was developed specifically for the 30BR, and works GREAT. And, especially for those using the "new" auto charger/tricklers (new to me - I just stay in my cave and use my Jones), IMR-4198, isn't bad. Good shootin'!! :)RG

Great info Bro.

Without a doubt N130. I have tested just about every powder that will work in a 30BR and anyone can shoot small holes with all of them but shooting a registered score match with the wind blowing will separate the best powders from the ones that can work in a 30BR. But then again if you can't read your flags worth a shit and pull the trigger at the right time and your barrel is not in tune then it doesn't really matter what u use.

I have found LT-30 to be the best alternative to H4198.
A couple of weeks ago, I tried some IMR 4227. 31.3 grns gave the same velocity as my 35.0 grn load of H4198 with my own 112.
Accuracy was pretty good. I plan on working with it some more.
Yes I know this was last years post but what speed were you running Jackie? I took the labradar out today and shot my 30BR starting at 34.4 and ran 3170 fps! I went to 34.6 and the group exploded and started to get bolt click so obviously this is to hot, I'm going to try to get to 3020-3060 fps but would like to know your powder weight and speed please.
Thanks

You should find bugholes within that range of velocity if all else is correct. For me, seating depth mattered.

I don't get if Frankie. Your getting bolt click at 34.6? A lot of people that I know are running 35 grains or a tad over that of H4198 with no problems at all. I've tested with loads above my normal go to load of 34.5 many times and it never did that to me. That lot must be really fast if your getting 3170 out of 34.5. I'm getting right at about 3100 with 34.5 and my own 108's. I've got 8 different lots of 4198 and have tested all 8 and they are all pretty close. I have a 9th lot that I bought in 2017 that I haven't tested but I have twelve 8 pounders of that stuff and I'm not going to break open a new container just to test it out.
