30 BR for 600 yrds

Is the 30 BR a good canidate for the 600 yrd line? If so, would you still use the 1:17 barrels mentioned here in these forums? What bullet is needed? I currently have a 6 BR, but the 30 intrigues me. Mabey as the backup rifle or even the primary rifle. Also, what is the differenct between the 30BR Schmidt, 30BR Robinet and the 30BR Remington? I know, a lot of questions.

i have seen a 30br shoot a 1.5 " group at 600yd. comp. .
although i would consider 30x47 if 30cal. small stuff is on your mind . T.R.

Yes it can do it. Three weeks ago I shot a 1.8" five shot group at 600 yards. Last weekend I shot a five shot group where 4 of them measured 1.1" however one shot opened up the group to 2.9". I use 118 gr bullets with a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps or so, my standard VFS load. Look at your chart and you'll see that the wind really affects the 118 gr bullets at that range. Does it shoot? yes and well, is it the best choice, probably not. I also shoot a 6mm Dasher and the wind deflection is about half. It is still fun

While that was a very interesting read, it sounds like there were two differnt records broke that day by two different shooters. that tells us that the conditions were perfect if not better. I shoot a 30BR a lot and it has become my favorite chambering. I have seen and delt with first hand what the wind can and will do to these short fat low BC bulets at 300 yards. It can be very frustrating!! I have a copy here of the equipment report from this years 600 yard nationaly and there isnt a single 30br. I wonder why!!!! If 600 is the game shoot a dasher!!!! If you just want to play at 600 shoot a 30br and et us know what you find. Most important thing though is to enjoy yourself!! Lee

I will be testing my 17 twist 308 W Palma chamber with .010" freebore with 115's and 135 flat base bullets at 600 yards probably this weekend.

At 300 yards, it shoots awesome,,, I shot a 600-48x in a 300 yard match back in August after 35 rounds of barrel break in. I used the Berger 115 with Lapua Palma brass, Wolf SRM primers on top of 50 grains of Varget.

WOW that I think is fun
I live in England and I also have a 30BR through a 1 in 15 throwing 125 grain Bergers
I am going to give 600 yards a try after reading your experience. Never thought it will be grouping well at that distance.

Can you confirm how many M.O.A. elevation to 300 and 600 yards please ?

Are you guys all reloading with H4198 around 34 grains ?

i'm in the learning process so i take corrections well..

my 1st .30 br is still at the smitty [waiting] here is a guess according to a chart@mz 2900fps - 125gr bullet - BC 0,387-site in 100yrds hgt ov bore 1.75" - Alt 500 ft. -temp 65
300 2225fps -12.3 "
600 1660 -1800fps -80.25 /-88.25" 13.5 / 14.5 MOA

I shoot 33.7 gr of 4198 over a Federal 205M primer. I am using Larry Moore's 118gr Hillbilly bullets. These things shoot great in my Shilen 17 twist barrel. I do use one of Gene Begg's tuners on it. Muzzle velocity over the Oehler 35P is 2950 fps. I came up 14 MOA from a 200 yard zero. I didn't shoot any distance between 200 and 600. Let us know how it turns out.

Here is the best I've done with the 30BR so far.

I have a 1:16 twist 30BR. I shot some 150 SMK at 300 yds just to see that I could do. Pretty amazing groups for no optimization. I got 5 shot groups from 1.2 - 1.6" with no wind flags. If memory serves me right I them up to 2700 fps using H4198 (that was the only powder I brought to the range that day). A slower powder would have performed better. In windy condition it is hard to say no to high B.C. I need all the help I can get. Luck, Tim

HI guys

Weather has been bad since christmas but finally I manage to shoot my 30BR at 600 yards

Here are my observations

if there is cross wind 125 is just marginally
to put it crudely you can get on standard NRA paper and if lucky get a good group but otherwise its a toss up

At 300 yards - totally different ballgame
it groups well and is competitive
even with cross wind

I hope that helps

I think 600 yards is doable with 30BR but in still condition
