30-284 230 Hybirds

just thinking outloud,,if a person had a 30 inch barrel chambered for the 284 case necked up to .308 and throated really long for the 230 Hybirds do you think speeds would be enough to better the straight 284 180 Hybird in the wind,,,

according to jbm the 7 180 at 2800 and the 30 230 at 2575 would have same drift at 1000,,so there would really be no use in shootin 230s over 180s unless it will go 2650 or better

anybody shoot a 30-284 ?

run the jbm ballistics numbers, but I suspect the answer is no and the 284 can go 2850 fairly easily.

IDK what speed to put in for the 30-284 230 load,,


the 7-300WSM 180 against the 300WSM 230 would be same principal ,,using the same case in 7mm with the 180 or in 30 with the 230,,which would be best in wind at 1000,,

If you use a .30-284 Shehane and 32" barrel, ~2740 is achievable with 4831 SC. A .284 Shehane will do ~2940. It is a ballistic wash, both ~4.7 MOA deflection at 1000. You need more case capacity to drive 230's fast enough to produce a meaningful advantage. Even then, it is not a decisive advantage and comes with a lot of baggage. The best F-Open cartridges currently available, all factors considered, push 7mm 180 Hybrids from ~2820-2950. It is possible to successfully go a little faster, as Larry B. does, but most matches are still won with a cartridge fitting those specs.
