30-06AI & Modern High BC Bullets

Steve Keep us posted on your .30-06 with 230s. I always assumed you could not get sufficient velocity with a bullet that heavy. 2700 makes it look much better. It would be nice to see the old workhorse competitive again using modern technology.
I have some MRP and could try some with 230s but my throat might not be long enough.

can you provide the load data that gets 2700 fps from an '06 ? with a 230 ???

I've thought several times about a straight .30-'06 F-Open rifle shooting 230 Hybrids for our 600 yard matches. At 22 pounds and ~2700 fps, recoil would be mild and barrel life should be excellent. It would still have excellent ballistics and would be a viable LR backup should my .300 WSM or .284 Shehane be unavailable for some reason. It would take advantage of high quality Lapua brass and leverage my inventory of 230's. I really need to order a reamer for it.

thanks...
going from a 30" bbl to a 32" bbl yields nearly 60 fps and breaks the 2700 number...

thanks
more food for thougt

I use a 34" barrel on my .300 WSM. Not for velocity, but to put more mass out front and get better balance and tracking. My best estimate is that 34" provides ~30 fps over 32", not significant at 1000 with 230 Hybrids.

Digging up an old thread here.

I believe that Berger used to give a G7 BC of 0.380 for the 230gr Hybrid.

However the new packet I have here at home says 0.368

My 215 Hybrids have 0.354 written on the packet.

I don’t point bullets. Just a basic BTO sort.

In my 300WSM I run the 215’s at 2930fps comfortably.
I haven’t yet tried the 230’s as I want to keep this barrel throated for the 215’s and lighter pills.

But 2820-2850fps seems to be a pretty common number thrown about for the 300WSM.

Using my Litz ballistics app with the above BC’s I get the following in 10MPH wind.

215Hyb at 2930fps = 51.9”

230Hyb at 2840fps = 51.9”

I would like to try the 230’s, but I have found the 215’s easy to tune and reasonably easy to shoot well. With the above calcs I just don’t see the advantage of the 230’s in a WSM or smaller case, unless I am missing something??
