.30-06 Kicks Like a Mule

I’m using 5744 with a 325 grain FTX in the #1 you graciously sold me, it’s not too bad. Max load is 48 grains and it starts at 32 grains, the rifle shoots 42.5 grains very well. The limbsaver butt lad is awesome! Good luck with Siamese Mauser and 350s, fun!

Thanks for that! I have a bag of 50 I loaded for my 1886 Winchester by Miroku.
I’m not gonna try load development yet. Just shoot a few to get a feel for it and see if I still have my Man Card.
I have some more of those plated bullets I might load up lite if I find my card has expired!

Call me stupid. I just put a thick Pachmeyer recoil pad on my Siamese Mauser in 45/70 and I’m going to shoot it next time I hit the range. 350s with a warm load. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I did that once upon a time in a Marlin 1895 Cowboy model (the light one without a pad). I loaded 10 300 grain XTP's with as much H335 as the manual said a Marlin would take. I think I still have 7 of them. Apparently the Marlin can take more than I could.

My grandson had a good comeback when I had him shooting a lightweight 20 gauge slug gun. I asked him if the recoil annoyed him. He said "Only when you think about it".

Haven't seen that video for quite a few years but from memory their two toys were a .577 Tyrannosaur and they dragged the .700 H&H out a bit too

In the 60 & 70s, I believe Winchester thought that anyone who found a 30-06 as hard kicking, should shoot a smaller caliber.

Sighting in, just put a Protektor 4x8 sandbag behind the butt. In a hunting situation, how many round so you expect to actually shoot, and if you have shot at game do you even remember the recoil or report? I don't.

My buddy owns a trap range so I asked him to help me pattern my 870 with magnum reciever. Setup an old sheet at 50 yards. First shot was normal trap load. Second was a 3.5" 54 pellet 4 buck load. Moral of the story is be suspicious if someone wants to film you shooting and you didn't load the gun yourself. Beer and ice from the cooler helped him see the humor in it.

Early this year, I took my 1962 Remington 700 in 30-06 out to the range. Hadn't fired it in at least 20 years. Total round count was 42 rounds. I loaded 20 rounds for it. After three shots, I packed back into the case and when I got home, put it up for sale.

Back to memories for me.

In the early 60's I wanted more than my Marlin 30-30. Bought a Remington 721 in 30-06.

Now for decades I have shot 375 H&H, 338 Win Mag and a whole assortment of 30-06's, including the little Remington 760 carbine I still shoot today. Nothing.

Nothing kicked me as hard and as damaging as that Remington 721 in 30-06. Got rid of that sucker and never got fond memories of doing it.

"Yep, years ago when Rem brought out the Ultra Mags I jumped right on the 7mm & 300 and didn't mind target shooting either one a full evening in the woods. Now adays, 15 plus years later NOPE I'm good with the short action and small stuff".


That is the same route I am taking Bill. They may not have the energy as the big stuff, but if you can place the bullet where it needs to be, still lights out.

I have quite a few rifles, but I enjoy shooting my 7mm 08 the most and it sure puts the deer down.

The absolute worst I've ever been kicked was by my cousin's M70 Lightweight(no,not a Featherweight).It had a 20 inch barrel and was chambered in 30-06 with a Tasco 3-9 on it.I have some nice rifles that shoot groups that are farther from center to center than one of those scopes is from my forehead on the high power.H said he didn't think he could shoot it well enough to sight it in,and it was close to deer season,so I just sat at my shooting bench and told him to hand it to me.I didn't get up and I didn't pay attention to what kind of ammo he had for it.At the time,I was hunting with an M700FS in 300WM,and nothing that could be loaded in an 06 could be as bad to shoot as my 300.When I squeezed off the first sloppily held shot,I remember seeing what was like a bright flash,followed by a lot of pain from being kicked in the head by the scope.Blood flowed from my eyebrow and I just sat there feeling stupid.He had bought 220 grain round nose ammo for that very light rifle that had a scope with next to no eye relief.I learned a lot from that one shot.

There was a guy I knew who was fairly heavy, ok really heavy like 375 lbs heavy so he gets a hold of a Remington 700 safari in 375 H&H.

It's summer five of us at a private range and he takes out the 375 H&H, no optic
only irons and loads and fires a round standing.

We all watched the rifle send a shock wave of fat down his body, he turns to us and
says f&*king brutal. We peed our pants laughing.

There is published load data for reduced charge with H4895 for youth. I found this data in an old old sierra manual. Tried it out in brother in laws light 06 with 165gr sierra bullets. It did make a difference.

I shoot .308 fairly regularly so I don't find .30/06 too objectionable...now when I dig the Model 70 .375 ouch & ouch or one of the .45/70s out of the safe, it's a different story!

I have a .270 Featherweight made in 1955. I saved my money and bought it out of Shotgun News when I was 17. Straight comb and aluminum butt plate. It is a shooter and I have killed a lot of stuff with it but I don't shoot it for fun anymore.
