30-06 fans sell me on it

Just did some engine work for guy who didnt have much money so i asked what do you have to trade he said i have a old rem700 30-06 to trade i said what the hell why not i dont own a 30cal got home started lookin at reload data and found out that all the powders i have (slow stuff) dont really match this cartridge but with times the way they are i dont want to rack up a gunsmith bill so what can i do with it "ie" pro's and con's kind of thing
Tons of history books been written on the old 06. Finn Aagaard has a great write up on it. Called .30-06: American standard. It's a very informative read. One that says it all about the 30-06. Find it and read it.

I scored a Wally world clearance M700 adl in 30-06. Thought about semi custom 220 swift. Than I found a deal on some bottom metal and a HS stock. Buddy had a RCBS sb die set(free) and a neighbor had some brass from a relatives estate. After shooting it, keeping it as an all around game rifle it was met to be. If I grow really fond of it, maybe my first Shilen remage, in 30-06.

I did the same, $288.88 out the door, added a Fajen laminated woodstock and BDL floor plate assembly, great all around rifle setup!

The 30 06, in the hands of a skilled rifleman will take just about every game species in North American and probably all of them but when you're hunting dangerous game, i.e., the large brown bears, it's probably a good idea to have something heavier for a margin of safety. ;) Even so, a 180 grain Nosler Partition or Bonded bullet is a pretty lethal proposition in a 24" barrel that can full advantage of a slow burning powder thus giving you the best energy values for this cartridge.

It is one of the greatest cartridges ever created capable of outstanding accuracy and terminal performance on game.

You just simply can't go wrong with it. You have an excellent choice of high-performance bullets today which makes it even more effective.

The only adverse comment I have is that for recoil sensitive shooters, it can be a little rough with the heavier bullets but that's only an issue shooting off the bench. You'll never feel the recoil in a hunting situation. So, it's not the ideal target rifle cartridge for a lot of sustained shooting but for hunting, there is none better.

150-165 grain Sierra, any LR primer, a mild load of 4350, 4064 and it will take any black bear or whitetail you encounter. Fine cartridge. Just so common that rifle nuts tend to go down the path toward uncommon or "cool".

Nothing not to like about the old 06....some R23 and a 180 grain of your choosing will be bad medicine for anything you want to use it on

215gr Berger or something like a 180gr Partition class bullet if you prefer pushed along with a case of N550 or N560 and you will see a side of the old boy you wont believe, smaller game you can drop it down to a 165gr or even a 125/130gr bullet for lots of speed and flat shooting. Ill give up everything in my safe but my 30.06 will be there at the end

An accomplished sling shooter named German Salazar had a high opinion of the '06. Too bad that his writings are no longer available. Loss of his work to the shooting community is a pity. I wish that I would have made copy of his articles when they were available.

110gr @ 3450fps
to
220gr @ 2600fps

That should pretty much cover most things you might want to do in North America. Are other choices better at particular things? Sure. But finding a more well rounded cartridge would be challenging.

Using 30-06 brass, you can neck up or down for even more flexibility
25-06 (75gr Vmax)
6.5-06 A-Square
270
280
338-06 A-Square
35 Whelen
375 Whelen Improved (350gr TSX)

A 3 rifle collection of 25-06, 30-06, and 35 Whelen would probably take care of 99% of what 99% of us would ever want to do.....or at least what I would want to do

The 'American Standard' is a great name but it should be used more as the benchmark for large bore barrel life.

R23,r26 are my fav i will move heaven and earth to find those. 100v, H and imr 4350, 8133,h1000,7828,4000 power pro, vv570,vv160,165,h4831 and some others
What twist and length is the barrel? If its 12 twist 22-24" you would likely be served best with lighter bullets and 4350 class powders.

Use these to figure out what you can probably stabilize in that pipe. Take some dummy round measurements to get a general idea of how long you can load each bullet weight class so you know which you can put close to the lands and not be way down in the case eating up powder room and you can squeeze a good deal of performance out of any gun.

You could ream the chamber to 30-06 ai for a little more juice out of the same pipe and just a little cash for a gun smith.

But honestly with that powder list if you even consider doing a rebarrel on that rifle I'll say this, I have yet to meet the man that has said "I regret buying a 280AI". It can use every powder on your list, fits your bolt face, and is a ballistic wet dream. Softer shooting than a 30-06 too.

Exactly! Except I now have a one rifle collection that does that! I found a nib mid 80's Sauer 200 switch barrel. Finest rifle I have ever shot with straight grain field grade walnut. 30-06, 270 and 25-06 barrels. Only takes 10 min to swap out. One holer 5 shot that maintains poa even when smoking hot. Now to find a smith to make me a whelen barrel. They are complicated because the bolt locks into the barrel and not the receiver. But any true machinist can make one.

I've used it for hunting for the last 40 years. Very accurate. Load down for deer, load up for elk. Can kill everything walking on the North American Continent. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
