30-06 fans sell me on it

Ignoring the flyer, I guess if it took all day to shoot one group the statement would technically be accurate.

thats not a flyer! thats the poi when attach the magnetospeed to check the velocity after shooting my 5. Next time I go out i'll do a couple of rounds for ya without the magneto!

Loaded to pressure signs, and backed off .5gr, my 24” 308Win shoots 190VLDs at 2450fps, my 26” 30-06 shoots 180Elite Hunters at 2780fps, and my 26” 30-06AI shoots 190VLDs at 2975fps. I feel like those numbers justify the 30-06.

Try 4895 with light bullets, and 4350 with heavy bullets.

As many have already said, there should be no selling needed. The 30/06, if not the perfect cartridge, is awfully close. I can't think of a better cartridge for general hunting and it doesn't suck as a target cartridge either. 180's at 2750, 150's at 3000, this from a 22 inch barrel. From a 26, I can push 200 MK's to 2750 as well. The truth is, if no other cartridges had been developed subsequent to 1906, we wouldn't be too badly hurt; except for the small cartridges. WH

Just did some engine work for guy who didnt have much money so i asked what do you have to trade he said i have a old rem700 30-06 to trade i said what the hell why not i dont own a 30cal got home started lookin at reload data and found out that all the powders i have (slow stuff) dont really match this cartridge but with times the way they are i dont want to rack up a gunsmith bill so what can i do with it "ie" pro's and con's kind of thing
I've used IMR 4064 and WIN 748 since around 1975 and still do. I've killed groundhogs, hogs, crows, and truly more deer than I can remember. Rem 700 Classic, 150-165 gr. bullets. With a clean bbl and doing my part, will shoot less than 1 MOA out to 300 yards, and that's with Hornady's #3031 FB bullet. I can't really find anything to gripe about that caliber and rifle.

just the recoil!

The only real downside I can think of is by modern standards it's not a good case design. It has a lot of body taper and a very shallow shoulder angle, the cases will need to be length trimmed frequently because of these "detriments". In it's defense, the "detriments" are not out of line with other cartridges designed in the same general era, the original design coming from the 30-03 cartridge. It's also a military origin cartridge designed to feed, fire and extract once without issues. It's design wasn't done with the handloader in mind with minimal body taper and sharp shoulder angle.

30-06 is nothing fancy, but gets the job done killing game out to 400-500 yards. Ammo is relatively easy to find. My 30-06 shoots 1 MOA with 180 gr Nosler bullets and IMR 4350 powder

For what its worth I just stuck one of my 5x norma cases in the gauge and its still 3 tho short of max length. Not bad for hot loads.

The 30-06 is one fine, grand old trooper. It will cover shooting from varmints (110-125 grain bullets and medium to heavy big game, with bullets in the 150-165 grainers. For larger animals i.e. moose and brown bear, the 200 grainers will get the job done, as all of these have done for years, by a hunter that places his bullets in the correct spot.
If you reload, 4831 will cover just about all you need. And most anywhere you go in this big old world, you can find ammunition for it on the shelves, which can sure be a blessing.
Fire that old gal up and enjoy it.
