3 Days Makes A Year

I was out there last year shooting them all around my property and others just west of Rawlins in Sweetwater County. I drove out from N.Florida, spent 6 weeks wandering.

Ain't no coincidence, Phil.

We showed Jim 5Spd that area, several years ago. A few of my buds got together & we drove up there to shoot for a couple days. One of them invited Jim 5Spd to meet up with us for an afternoon. Gave him directions & everything!
Heck, I even took pleasure in letting Jim shoot my rifles and my ammo!!!
Here's Jim shooting MY .20TAC, LOL...

Anyhoo...
There's an "unwritten code" amongst the friends I hunt/shoot with. That being, if you're invited to hunt/shoot somewhere: YOU KEEP THAT LOCATION TO YOURSELF

I guess all those 100,000s of acres of private land that Jim has access to are still safe, since he "sold out" the public land area that we showed him... :(

No offense to CaptainMal, obviously! He wouldn't know how Jim "found" that area to recommend him...

Hold on.

Two years ago Jim told me there was much public land north of Medicine Bow. I ordered and bought a BLM map. After studying out the map, the wife and I went all that way with NO idea of where we would go and what we would find. We scouted for about two days on our own and covered literally tens or maybe hundreds of dirt roads and two tracks. We noted and got gps coordinates for many may different areas over many miles. Couple times we met and talked with others doing the same thing and once we joined a couple of them for a hunt.

As of now I found and have hunted over maybe 10 - 15 different dog areas. NEVER did Jim guide me, show me, meet me or tell me where to specifically go.

Read that again FREDO - you basterd. You slandered Jim without knowing anything. I have never met the man. His help was little more back then but giving me an area of the state to try. I have never seen his private or public lands, never hunted with him etc. A couple locals, especially Charlie George, community supervisor there, went out of their way to find us two different campgrounds to set up the RV and even introduced us to private ranchers. We are not a threat to anyone and have been very pleased with the community there and what they can offer. Those offerings came from the locals that we met and our own industry to find the way on our own.

What sadness I get from reading your attack on him without knowing or asking me about how I actually found places to hunt. My take is you do not want my old wife and I to ever go there again. You sound like our presence is an evil you want to snuff. Rot in hell you SOB.

Fredo,
When you guys said you were out there shooting p-dogs my pal and I were holding/hosting a meet & greet predator p-dog shoot in Alcove from another site.
We got directions to where you were and my pal who lives there said yes he knows he knows the spot you are in since even he has sent tons of p-dog shooters there before your time. I have shot up there many times & no specific spot is anyone personal areas. I had been sending P-dog shooters to the Basin for years.
Since this entire area is not a "secret" spot or private its open for any one looking to shoot p-dogs.
There is not hidden ageneda and I have not said yea that spot on the side of the road where Fredo camped is ok to go.
Now if you were on private lands then that's completely different, but heck this is no special spot, yours or my secret spot. It is everyones spot from thousands before you and the ones behind you.
The Basin is an area I will always send people to if I have not invited them to shoot on any of the ranches I shoot them on.
I can tell you state spots just north of me, they are like the Basin, public and open & have thousands of P-dogs, but you will have to pack in a mile. Ive shoot thousands there as well.
I invited CaptainMal to my own private ranches, but times didn't work out so he made his own way up there this year. Again there was no selling out of Fredos secret spot & I say $100 he didn't even shoot in that area.
When was the last time you were there? Tell anyone where you would be?
I am not bothered but wont take saying I sold any one out when it comes to sending others to Public lands.

Go back & read your initial post, Capt. Mal:
Jim, 5 Speed, directed me to this place a couple years ago so wife and I went back. Good move.

That's all I had to go on, and what I replied to.
Wyoming is friggin' HUGE and full of p-dogs, yet Jim directs you to that tiny little town?
A town that is literally in the middle of nowhere?
A town that you'd hafta look real hard on a map just to see?
And a town that accesses an area that he just happened to meet us at, a few years prior??? You know what they say about coincidences...

Like I said, that ain't no coincidence. Call it, or me, what ya want. And will tell ya this, the guys I was shooting with out there ain't none too pleased, either. Sure, it IS PUBLIC LAND, I already covered that. That's not the issue, it's the "code" that you (and him) are seemingly oblivious to, and what I commented on...

"Basterd"? You betcha. When it comes to keeping the lid on a good hunting spot, dang straight I am. And dang straight, I'm not the only one, either. Find me a p-dog shooter or varmint hunter who will 'sell out' there own honey holes to a stranger on the 'net. Prolly will find NONE. But ask those same hunters where they know others have hunted, and they're all too happy to share that info...like Jim did.
Find me a coyote hunter who'll blab about locations to their hard found public land honey holes...
Or a deer hunter...
Or an elk hunter...
In the information age of the 'net, those spots won't be good for long if ya open yer mouth about 'em.

Weren't the other shooters you met in town 'reserved' about their spot(s)? Dang straight they were!
Did run into two groups of two coming into the hotel. Neither group were very friendly as if expecting a problem with me finding out their hunting place. One flat out lied and said publi ... opps, the other guy chimed in to correct using private land. Then they were off.

Betcha you were you similarly 'secretive' to them about your spots, too? Of course you were, and rightfully so! You're invested in time, $$$ and effort, why would you give that away & spoil your own plans?
Point is, you wouldn't. Neither would I. And I don't hold that against ANYONE!

Just sayin' don't get all hypocritical about acting protective over a public land p-dog spot. I am, those guys were, and bet you were, too. That common denominator is the very same thing that motivated my post, above...

Nowadays, guys wanna go on the internet and find "instant gratification" instead of finding spots for themselves to hunt. But based what you added in your last post, it sounds like you did the same work that we did to find some shooting up there. Which is why I ended with "no offense" to you.

Will say again, I'm HAPPY that you found some success and fun up there! There is alot of land to sift thru, and, as you've found out, the public spots are pock marked all over the place. Kudos to you for doing the the work...

I'll apologize for overstepping, as it seems more clear now that I did.
But will maintain that, you getting referred to that little town WAS NO COINCIDENCE.

Be mad if you want, I don't care.
I follow the "code" and won't sell out spot that my friends have showed me to ANYONE. What you call "basterd", others might call "honorable".
I've got friends all over the country to hunt with, and it ain't because I'm spillin' the beans. They take me to their best spots because they trust me.
Period.

You either get that part, or ya don't. Can't explain it any more plain-er.

Take care!

Appreciate the comments, Fredo.

Ironically I used to visit that town often in past years. I was a teacher and motorcycle writer that wandered the world in the summers. At times, I even pulled trailers for delivery through there to avoid going up and over Elk Mountain when the weather was bad.

Used to stop in Montana on return runs to hunt prairie dog out of Zortman. Few years ago, when hinted of the area, I explored it more on my own. Pam and I are in our 70's and it's a long ride for me to drive and pull that toy hauler. Takes me 4 days to get there. Zortman would add at least another day to the run and lots of miles. I gave it a shot, literally and figuratively.

We are not much in the way of hunters/shooters. She poops out quickly and I follow her lead. Think the longest we stayed set-up would be maybe 3 hours at a time or day. Actually we spend more interest taking pictures and just enjoying a good "look around".

On this run we only lasted three days. Then the reality of the heat got us as we wandered a bit more West. In just another week we headed back to Tennessee and kids/grandkids and then Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Cool there, literally and figuratively.

Not familiar with hunter hatred toward others. Always shot groundhogs near Dayton, Pa. Took many along to experience the fun over the decades I lived there. Took many to my old place in Central Pa. for deer. Still take people to my place in Georgia for some nice deer hunting. Thought I was being nice. Never gave selfishness or hatred much of a thought. Enjoy involvement in the success of others.

You are right about those guys I met. Just sitting around drinking a beer and they showed up dressed in NRA logo camo. Thought it strange they looked so patriotic but were in a Jap SUV. Their "aloofness" still surprises me. Guess I am naive about the whole issue of personal spots. I take people fishing and am happy to show them where to find fish. If someone is on one of my "spots", I go to another with a wave and smile.

As stated before, Jim was only very "general" with his direction about three years ago, if I remember correctly. My/our legwork filled in the specific locations where we found a few hours of fun and adventure. May never have the physical ability to get back. May be back doing it again next year. None of us can tell the future. Just know I have made good memories and don't want them tarnished by an unwarranted ( to me) attack on Jim.

Hope you don't spend a lot of time parsing my words. They come faster than I think sometimes. If you want to find something pre-conceived, it's probably there in the words. I am just happy to be here and would like to continue that way.

Be nice to Jim. I have communicated with him but do not know him. Just want his image untarnished in my mind.

Its all good on my end, Capt. Mal.
I'm sure Jim would tell you that I'm not the quite 'basterd' in real life that I've been acting here. I was only too happy to let a perfect stranger enjoy shooting my stuff, actually enjoyed it very much!

In truth, the hypersensitivity was/is on my part. Sadly, nowadays, one is almost forced to be somewhat 'protective' of their little places of happiness, or risk losing them. I don't like that part of hunting AT ALL, but that's the reality of things. Anymore, there's little/no "honor" to respect another's "honey hole" that was shown them. And if it happens to be in a public spot, then that just makes the situation all the more 'touchy'. Not proud of saying it, but the guys who keep their cards close to their chest get to play more hands. And the internet just makes it sooooooo easy to find a nook or cranny to be exploited. All it takes is a general area & Google takes care of the rest. FYI, P-dog towns are quite visible on Google Earth, if ya know what yer lookin' at... ;)

I'm sure you can appreciate the sensitivity, seeing as how far you had to travel to get up to Wyo. Its a calculated risk to make a long trip, hoping that there's still some action waiting to be had at the end of the rainbow. That's why I mentioned, in sincerity, that I was happy you found ample p-dogs up there to whack! Only been there a few times, and not in a while, so getting a 'good report' bodes well for a future trip...

That said, I was thinking about this a bit yesterday on how we might turns these lemons into lemonade, and came up with something...

What say we get some kind of impromptu 'accurate-shooter' varmint section get together up there, next year? Considering how we both know the area, maybe some others would care to make a trip of it? We could go our ways to shoot, or join up & use volley fire against the burrowing enemy. I know I have as much fun spotting as I do shooting!!!
Could ronde @ that bar in town in the evenings & yuck it up a while...I could think of less fun things to do! Maybe can convince ol' snert to make the trip from NY, get some of my Utah p-doggers up there again, too. Heck, we could prolly wipe the whole basin clean of vermin in a matter of days... :)

Just a thought. A little get together would be a good excuse to make the trip again!

Thoughts?

I could get away with the wife next year. Only thing is she would not be happy. Take her along and she sometimes gets "filled-up" shooting and switches to a magazine in the shade.

Guess it was early and cool. No shade for her here.

Keep in touch. We missed out on that trip and hunt last year. New grandchildren in Pa. had us there and with kids in Tennessee. Will not know until early next year or at least after Daytona Bike Week in early March. That's the next time I probably will even pull that trailer out.

Of course, I could drive and motel by myself.
