Some Days Everything Goes Well

Went hogging yesterday afternoon. First hogging this year where the wind was not a factor. Beautiful day.

Farmer told me about a problem hog hole in one of his field. I set up. Because of the sloping terrain and over growth the closest I could get was 230 yards. At about 6:30 he pops his head out of the hole and sit there. I don't like frontal shots at that distance but the hay is calf high. If I wait until he emerges from the hole to take a broad side shot I'll lose him in the high hay. We are starng at each other, so it seems. No guts no glory so I line of the Weatherby Super VM on my shooting sticks. Sight on his nose and sent the 55 Nosler BT at him. He disappears. I have to know. So I walk up to the hole. He laying in there shot through the neck. Wow. Great shot for me or was it luck. Who knows but I'll take it.

7:30 that evening set up on another field. One comes rolling out of the tree line. Large hog. Hay is high here also. Obscure profile for shot so I wait and wait to get a better profile. Finally get a broad side shot but it's far for me, 237 yards. Take my time and line up the Weatherby and shoot. Missed high. How do I know? Because he looks around but does not run to hole. He resumes feedig. Take second shot. Hit. See the tail wagging while he is pancaked. He's down. Wow. Maybe lucky but he's down anyway.

Didn't see anymore that evening. Some days everything goes right, well almost everything, I missed on that first shot at 237 but not too bad for a 71 year old using standard duplex recticle and no dial up i.e. Kentucky windage.
