FredJake:

The .284 is a great cartridge and will do exactly what you want it to do. There are two concerns I would consider. You say you want a 22" barrel and your primary purpose is deer hunting.

1. The .284 is not the easiest cartridge to get to shoot out of a repeater. Feeding can be an issue. The long bullets will require you to modify the magazine box, and action.

2. You say you want to use a 22" barrel. This will not take advantage of the case capacity of the .284. You will not be able to reach the higher velocities this cartridge is capable of achieving.

If you want to shoot a 7mm in a hunting rifle with a 22" barrel I would recommend a 7mm/08 or 7/57. They have some advantages over the .284 in a hunting rifle and feed well from a magazine.

If you were going to use a long action the .284 presents another whole set of issues.
If I were going the long action route I would go .280Rem, .280AI, or 7mmRem mag. with a minimum barrel length 24" and if your goal is shooting further than 300 yards I would go 26".

I just finished a Remington model 7, 7mm08, with a #4 sporter, 20", 1:877, 5R. I shot Bullets from 120 Barnes XXXMX, to 150 Swift Sciroccos all shot sub .5 moa. and very capable of taking deer to 400 yards with no problems.
Good luck with your project just my 2 cents worth.

I hunt deer here in NYS with a 16" Xp100 chambered for the 284 Winchester and shots out to 200 yards in heavy timber put deer down right where they were last seen...
I use the 140 grain Ballistic tips, and H-4350.......

My dad had my first 284 bolt gun built in 1974. Over the years it killed hogs, deer--whitetail, blacktail, mule deer, and elk. It is perfectly adequate to hunt anything in the lower 48. There are a couple of problems though. Getting one of them to feed properly is a major PITA, my rifle was spotty at that at best. The other thing is, to keep the recoil at comfortable levels I shot, for the most part, Sierra 140 Gamekings. Anything heavier made the recoil uncomfortable. Moving forward to today, we have muzzle brakes that will tame the recoil. But, after owning several rifles with brakes I don't think they're a good option. Every time I fire a couple of different P-Dawg rifles I have with brakes on them my family winces and complains about the noise and blast. Those complaints and several articles later reading about permanent hearing loss due to brakes has caused me to not build any more rifles with brakes on them.
Moving on, the last rifle I built is a 260AI, In that caliber, the 140 class bullets fly very well, several have BC's in in the high 5's and low 6's. After looking at the damage they do on an Antelope at 500+ yards I see why people in Scandanavia have been killing Moose with them since 6.5X55 rifles became readily available over there. They are a step back from a 284 but they're close enough I don't think it matters much.

A couple of yrs ago I had all the parts for a build sitting here and was trying to convince myself to do a 284Win. In the end I built a 7-08. It will kill everything I want to shoot with it and does it with cheaper brass, less powder and no feeding issues. If I need to go shoot elk I'll carry my 7mmRM. To me the 284Win seems to be a cartridge that fills a niche that doesn't need to be filled, at least in hunting.

To take advantage of the increased case capacity and run heavy bullets you need to be in a long action, which sort of defeats the purpose. <- this is the biggie for me since I was building a short action.

In a repeater they can be hard to feed.

If you really need the higher velocity and longer range you are better off with a WSM

I can easily shoot 140s at 2800+ out of a 7-08. I've never shoot a deer at more than 250yards. I've spent way too much time behind an F class rifle at 600 to 1000 yards and have seen too many shots that for no apparent reason found their way to the 7-ring to take shots on animals beyond 400 yards. Will a 284 kill deer? Sure they will, just like a 30-30 or a 308, or a 30-06 or pretty much any other center fire cartridge, but for me it just didn't seem to offer any tangible advantage over a 7-08 in a short action and in a long action why not go ahead and build a WSM or a 7mmRM?

Too many "opinions" here, and not enough first hand experience. You can do it, but I'd still go 24" barrel to maximize performance.

Tikka T3 action, Lilja #3-9 twist, McMillan Sako Classic. The Tikka with a long action bolt stop and magazine, feeds like butter, and is a dream to work with.

And this is not just an opinion...
