.284 Win

Hi guys,

Could you share some more info on the standard .284 win, please?

Things such as..:
bullet
load combinations
velocity
maybe with ES & SD also
barrel length-twist rate-contour
total weight of your scoped rifle
chamber's neck diameter & throat/free bore,
"ideal" die sets (FL dies-seater-proper bushings)
etc.
how about pics of your rifle?

I'm going with this cartridge for my "long range" shooting (=could be 1000yds, F-Open, or Flyshoot. LG class, but open to HG with weight).
Fall in love with this round after reading "cartridge guide" in this forum and contemplating with it. I think it's a "good compromise" cartridge for my purpose.

If these help :
Will use Berger VLD 180 or 168 gr.
Brass Lapua 6.5x284 neck up.
The smith has the reamer on its way, .319 neck, throat can be set at any length.
Action is Stolle Panda w/ .473 bolt face.
Will make the stock myself.

Thanks you & Best Regards,
seb.

The only bullet I shoot in my newest .284 is the 162 A-max because thats what I started with and it shot them so good I never tried anything else...
The only powder I have used is H-4831SC @ 57.0 and it is compressed in my Winchester cases..
I never bothered to cronograph the load, but will come spring time..
The barrel is a 32" Brux 9 twist 1.350...
The complete rifle with a 10x50x60 Sightron weighs 23#'s
313 neck with a 149 freebore..
Warner Tool sizing die with 2 neck shoulder bushings and a seater die I made with the reamer and a chunk of the barrel..
It all sets in a Black/Black Joel Russo blank I worked over, and clear coated..
You can't believe how well it shoots....
I'll replace the front rest as soon as you send more over, and my number comes up....

Hi Preacher,
Thanks for the info.
Is your rifle glued in or screw in? or both?

I'll have some more rests (both the NEO & SEB) send to Ernie around late Jan.

seb.

Seb,
It's a 3 point screw in action...
My name is on the NEO list, and all I'll use it for is varmints, just like my friend RJ in Texas...........

Preacher,
would you please let me know what is your action:manufacturer and model.
Looks like a bat
sincerely
Filippo

Either 168 Bergers or 175 Sierra, but I will be trying some more Australian made custom flat bases bullets again.
I have tried H4831SC and H4350 (2213SC and 2209) but definitely prefer H4350 (2209)
Favourite primers are PMC, but if you cant get them, the BR2 primers.
I have tried to get to the 2950 fps node, but it is more tempermental with Australias smaller target centres, so I now stick to 2820 fps in a few different barrels, very consistant at this speed.
Barnard action with a QLD made Ken McLachlan aluminium stock, both of which I would get again if I had to start again
I have used about 5 different barrels in this caliber, 1 in 8" twist, the others in 9" (my current one is closer to 10" twist.). No brand preference at all, good ones and bad with anyone as you know.
The shortest distance I have ever used this caliber at is 600yds, the longest 1500yds, both in F class.
Semoga Sukses

Thanks a bunch, Preacher. Keep in touch with E.

Thanks for the info & pic, Rinoray.

Cr500, interesting info with the twist rate. In your experience, would a 1:9/5" twist barrel work just fine for 180 grain range bullet in .284win?
"Semoga Sukses"... he he ;D Thanks you, mate! The same to you.

seb.

Seb, no, dont go for a 9 1/2" twist if you want to shoot 180s (unless it is in Indonesia, warm weather and some altitude). My 9 1/2" barrel wont shoot 180s well at all. I have to use 168s in it.
A few of my 9" barrels have shot the 168s best as well. The only barrel I have had which realy shot tiny little groups at shorter ranges with 180s was an 8" twist True-Flite. A few people I know have had a very good run with 8.5 twist 7mms.

Seb,
I have 2 - Straight .284's built by Ray Bowman. One is Barnard action and one on a Nesika Bay. Both have Broughton 1x8 barrels.

Barnard is set up in F-Open configuration with a straight 1.25" taper and the Nesika is in NRA Match Rifle config. with a Heavy Target taper (a bit heavy for the sling). I shoot the Berger 180's in the Barnard and the 168's in the Nesika Bay. Both hammer.

Thanks you again, gentlemen.

Q: In practice, what is the advantages (if any?) 180 gr over 168gr bullet made by the same maker & type of bullet, for instance between Berger's VLD? for instance the barrel shoots good for both?

Which one better, both in bench & prone rifle, to use the slowest twist barrel that can handle the heaviest bullet - or to use the fastest twist for the bullets intend to be used?

Just curious,
seb.
